Chapter 98: Koyun Edogawa
After some careful choosing, Dai Xiaomei finally settled on the Passat that Jiang Yun had just returned.
Though it was a test-drive car, that did not mean it could not be sold.
And her reason for choosing it was simple enough.
There was an available car on the lot, the paperwork was complete, and she could drive it away at once.
More importantly, she never intended to rip Jiang Yun off too badly.
What had happened before was strange, certainly, but there was no proof that it had anything to do with him.
She could not, just because of a string of uncanny coincidences, take him for a vicious ride.
A car in the hundred-thousand range was perfect: enough to ease her own mind, and not enough for anyone else to think it expensive.
For people like them, who could not spare a few hundred thousand? They were all top streamers, after all, with a million or more on hand without a second thought.
Once the money was paid, the Passat belonged to Dai Xiaomei as well, though there were still a few procedures she needed to complete.
But that did not matter. At least for the time being, she had a car to get around in.
"Here. The one you said you'd drive back for me."
Dai Xiaomei handed the car keys she had just received to Jiang Yun.
"All right, I'll drive it back for you." Jiang Yun took the keys and got into the car.
After Dai Xiaomei and the others had also gotten in, Jiang Yun asked, "Where first?"
Dai Xiaomei glanced at the others and said, "Take Mozi home first; she lives closest. Then take Tuntun, and last take me home. Tuozi has been staying at my place lately anyway, so I can just park the car downstairs at my building."
"Sure."
Jiang Yun said no more and started the car at once.
On the way back, the others kept glancing nervously at the traffic around them, afraid that some vehicle would suddenly go mad and crash into them.
But reality was reality; there were not that many absurd happenings in the world.
Until both Mozi and Tuntun had been dropped off safely, nothing at all happened to the car.
By then, only Jiang Yun, Dai Xiaomei, and Tuozi remained in the car.
Seeing that nothing had gone wrong for so long, Tuozi could not help laughing. "Boss Dai, I think you're just overthinking it. Those earlier incidents were pure coincidence."
"Coincidence?" Dai Xiaomei twitched at the corner of her mouth. "Let me ask you this: what kind of decent person hangs a fire extinguisher higher than a Cayenne? If there really were a fire, who would it be for? Yao Ming?"
"Maybe the property management in that complex never intended to do proper fire prevention in the first place, so they just put something up to look like they had."
"Hah." Dai Xiaomei curled her lip. "A property management company that can't even do fire safety properly can only be called deserving of death."
As they talked, the car had also reached the area near Dai Xiaomei's residential complex.
At that point, Jiang Yun pulled over and turned to Dai Xiaomei. "I won't go in then. You drive in yourself. I'll take a taxi back. There's no way anything can happen over this short distance, right?"
At Jiang Yun's words, Dai Xiaomei looked around.
There were hardly any cars passing on the road near the complex, and the spot where Jiang Yun had stopped was very safe. No matter how she looked at it, it did not seem like anything could possibly happen.
Seeing this, Dai Xiaomei nodded. "Fine then. Go on back. I won't see you off."
"Mm."
Jiang Yun answered and got out of the car.
Dai Xiaomei moved into the driver's seat, and Tuozi followed her into the passenger seat.
"Bye-bye."
With a wave, Dai Xiaomei started the car.
The moment the engine roared to life, a thunderous sound rose from the road beside them.
A motorcycle came speeding in from the distance.
At once, Jiang Yun frowned.
He could tell from the sound alone that the machine had been illegally modified. A stock motorcycle simply would not be this loud, not even half as much.
And perhaps in an attempt to look cool, the rider leaned into a bend as he passed Jiang Yun, leaning far too low.
Then, in that very instant, disaster struck.
The rider seemed not to have the skill for it; as he leaned through the curve, the motorcycle began to wobble, and the next moment he was thrown off.
The bike, carried by its own momentum, flew sideways in a flash, streaking past Jiang Yun before slamming viciously into the rear half of the Passat behind him.
Bang!
The crash rang out with enormous force. Jiang Yun instinctively turned to look.
The Passat he had just parked had shifted position; the rear half of the body had been shoved several feet aside by the motorcycle.
The rear door was shattered, and half the motorcycle had plunged into the car.
The handlebars were pointed directly toward Dai Xiaomei.
Seeing the motorcycle so close at hand, Dai Xiaomei felt as though her heartbeat had nearly stopped.
She opened the car door at once and got out.
Staring at the wreckage of her new car, Dai Xiaomei opened her mouth as if she had a thousand things to say, yet could not find the words.
Tuozi, who had gotten out with her, subconsciously looked toward Jiang Yun.
That questioning gaze seemed to ask him, "Why didn't you just drive into the complex a little farther?"
By now, Dai Xiaomei had also come back to herself.
She said nothing, only turned around and silently looked at Jiang Yun.
Jiang Yun met their eyes, then looked at the tragically battered Passat.
His lips parted, but in the end all that came out was a sigh.
Sigh.
There's no washing this clean. There's no point in trying. Fine, forget it, let everything be destroyed. I admit it. I'm the curse on your car, all right?
"Hey, are you two not going to do anything about that guy?"
Tuozi pointed toward the motorcycle rider, who was writhing and howling not far away.
At her words, Dai Xiaomei and Jiang Yun both rolled their eyes, then said in unison, "Why should we care? He's not dead, is he? Besides, he was the one tearing down the street and showing off. Serves him right!"
As soon as the words left their mouths, both Dai Xiaomei and Jiang Yun froze.
They glanced at each other and could not help laughing.
Then Jiang Yun said, "Forget it. Better call the police and an ambulance, or the insurance claim will be a problem."
At the mention of insurance, Dai Xiaomei remembered some less-than-pleasant memories. She said gloomily, "Insurance on a new car only takes effect the next day. This time you bought a test-drive car with all the paperwork in order, but what about my Cayenne?"
Jiang Yun: ....
Jiang Yun shot her a glance, then pretended not to hear her and calmly took out his phone to call the police.
A Cayenne? What Cayenne? I have no idea what you're talking about.
Dai Xiaomei saw through his thoughts. She pouted and then called an ambulance.
This motorcycle rider could not die. If he did, the paperwork would become much more troublesome.
No matter what, this was Dai Xiaomei's new car!
Soon, the police arrived.
Unexpectedly, the officer who came to the scene turned out to be one of Jiang Yun's fans.
The moment he got out of the car, he grinned at Jiang Yun. "Well, if it isn't Detective Jiang Yun?"
Jiang Yun: ....
Damn it, Detective Jiang Yun indeed!
The officer surveyed the scene and then said, somewhat uncertainly, "Don't tell me the one involved again is the new car Dai Xiaomei bought?"
"No..." Jiang Yun shook his head.
Hearing this, the traffic officer breathed a sigh of relief. "Oh, I thought you really were like they say online..."
"It's the new car I bought to apologize to her."
Traffic officer: ....
After a few seconds of silence, the officer gave Jiang Yun a thumbs-up.
"Impressive. Worthy of Detective Jiang Yun."
