Chapter 59: Is There Something on My Face?
Ding ding ding~
Jiang Yun, still half-asleep, was jolted awake by the sound of his phone ringing.
Squinting his eyes, he answered the call.
“Hello?”
“Hello, is this Mr. Jiang Yun?”
“Yes, it’s me. Who’s calling?”
“I’m the head of the official livestream division at Douyin…”
“I’m not signing with any guild or platform. Anything else?”
Jiang Yun had received this kind of call more than once, so his reply was swift and definitive. Before the other side could finish speaking, he gave his answer.
“Mr. Jiang, perhaps you could listen to the terms we’re offering. Your current livestream audience is quite substantial on Douyin, but if you wish to grow further, we recommend signing with our platform. That way, we can provide you with better resources and promotion…”
The Douyin official sounded much like those from Shark Fight before—they were all reluctant to let large-scale streamers like Jiang Yun broadcast freely on their platforms. So they worked hard to pitch all sorts of benefits their platform could offer.
Jiang Yun listened, growing increasingly annoyed. After all, he still wasn’t fully awake.
He interrupted again, saying, “My streaming schedule isn’t stable, my hours aren’t fixed, my content isn’t consistent, and frankly, I’m not interested in how much money I make. If you don’t restrict my streaming time, content, viewer numbers, or gift revenue, I might consider signing.”
Hearing this, the staff member on the other end fell silent.
Huh???
Dude, how am I supposed to sign you up with these terms? You’re not guaranteeing anything, so if I sign you, I’m just wasting resources?
Platform contracts are, at their core, a restrictive wager. I offer you resources and promotion, you guarantee monthly streaming hours, gift revenue, so everyone profits. But all Jiang Yun says is nothing’s consistent, and he’s not interested in money. How are we supposed to negotiate?
“Mr. Jiang, in your situation, we may need to discuss it further with our team…” the staff member said weakly.
“No problem, take your time. I’m perfectly happy as things are—I treat streaming as a spice in my life. As long as you don’t make things unpleasant for me, I won’t switch platforms. I don’t really care about the gifts I get, but there’s no shortage of revenue right now, so there’s no need to sign. Shark Fight insisted I sign, so I simply stopped streaming there.”
Staff member: …So you’re threatening us?
Though the threat in Jiang Yun’s words was clear, the staff member kept a polite tone: “Understood, Mr. Jiang. We’ll consider your suggestion and contact you if we have further discussions. If other platforms reach out to you during this time…”
“Don’t worry. When I say I won’t sign, I mean it for all platforms. I don’t like jumping around.”
“Alright, then we won’t disturb you further, Mr. Jiang.”
“Mm, goodbye.”
Jiang Yun nodded, knowing the other party understood him.
He didn’t expect anything in terms of promotion, nor did he care about how much he could earn from streaming. He treated it as entertainment; as long as they didn’t make things difficult for him, he wouldn’t leave.
He hung up and glanced at the time.
Half past ten in the morning.
Feeling it was about time, Jiang Yun got out of bed to wash up.
While washing, he checked Douyin.
Just as he expected, the tag “The Stubborn Streamer and the Stubborn Scammer” was trending at the top.
Clicking in, he saw many new videos added under the tag.
The most liked was a segment from Jiang Yun’s stream yesterday.
“She’s my colleague, lately posing as a scammer nearby…”
The comment section was filled with jokes about Jiang Yun.
“Brother Yun’s stubborn streak earned him a lifetime of introversion.”
“Brother Yun: I’m not guilty, just stubborn—how’d I become a sinner?”
“Brother Yun: I go out to buy cigarettes, neither stairs nor elevator for me.”
“In the middle of the night, Brother Yun wakes up and slaps himself: ‘Serves you right for eating so much!’”
“......”
Jiang Yun, exasperated, exited Douyin.
Luckily, he’d already anticipated the comments after last night’s events, so he was mentally prepared.
After finishing his morning routine, Jiang Yun ordered delivery for lunch.
He changed clothes, ready to head out to a repair shop to get new tires fitted.
After all, who knew how long it would take for the police to recover his missing tires?
Even if they found the suspect, the tires might already have been sold and the money spent.
To avoid hindering his own travels, it was better to get new tires installed at a shop.
However, just as Jiang Yun stepped out, he received a call from an unknown number.
“Hello.”
“Jiang Yun, right? Come to the station and pick up your tires.”
A woman’s voice, a police officer, came from the other end, amid a cacophony of background noise.
Jiang Yun was stunned and instinctively asked, “You work that fast?”
The officer, perhaps dissatisfied with Jiang Yun’s remark or for some other reason, retorted sharply, “Are you questioning our ability? Get to the station quickly, or we’ll toss them in the trash bin!”
“Oh.”
Jiang Yun replied quietly, not daring to say more.
He sensed the officer had something against him.
After hanging up, he hailed a ride to the station he’d visited yesterday.
But upon arrival, Jiang Yun was met with a surprise… So many people?!
From the lobby to the entrance, the place was packed!
Jiang Yun was bewildered by the scene.
Since when was the police station so lively?
Noticing most of the crowd were middle-aged women, Jiang Yun even wondered if there was some kind of free oil and rice giveaway happening.
He squeezed his way through the crowd and found the duty officer at the front desk, explaining his purpose.
“Hello, I’m Jiang Yun. You just called me to pick up my tires.”
“Tires?” The officer paused, confused.
Fortunately, another officer reminded him, “The four tires that just came back from the storeroom—take him over to get them.”
“Oh, right.”
The duty officer responded, then gave Jiang Yun a strange look. “Follow me.”
That look made Jiang Yun feel uneasy.
What’s going on? Is there something on my face?
Following the officer to the storeroom, Jiang Yun retrieved his four tires stolen by Wei Ma Ye.
Worried Jiang Yun might not be able to carry them, the officer lent him a confiscated tricycle for transport.
As Jiang Yun rolled out with four tires loaded on the tricycle, every officer who saw him instinctively stopped what they were doing, casting him odd glances.
Huh???
Is there something on my face???
