Chapter 87: Hell Is Empty, and the Devils Walk Among Us!
The firefighters arrived swiftly at the scene, and after a round of rescue efforts, the blaze was soon brought under control.
At that moment, viewers in the livestream finally sensed something was amiss.
“Wait, where’s Brother Yun?”
“Did he forget to take us with him when he left?”
“Hey, hey, hey, Brother Yun, you left us behind!”
“Where did Brother Yun go?”
“Oh no, we’ve been abandoned!”
“......”
Amid a flood of question marks in the chat, Jiang Yun returned to the scene.
Some viewers noticed that Jiang Yun was now carrying a huge black plastic bag.
Meanwhile, the firefighters had extinguished the last traces of fire. Applause echoed all around.
“Well done!”
“Thank you, firefighters!”
“Luckily the firefighters were here, otherwise who knows how big the fire would’ve gotten!”
Listening to the crowd’s words of gratitude, the firefighters nodded in response: “This is what we’re supposed to do. When you get home, check what’s been burned and deal with it accordingly. For now, please wait a bit; the smoke inside is heavy and it’s not good for your health.”
Upon hearing this, the little boy from before jumped out again, hugging the leg of the firefighter who had spoken, his face sorrowful: “It was my house that caught fire. My homework was still on the balcony. Is it still there?”
The firefighter turned to look at the balcony, now scorched black, and his lips twitched.
Is there anything left?!
“I’m sorry, kiddo. I’m afraid your homework didn’t make it. Ask your parents to buy—”
Before the firefighter could finish, the boy quickly interrupted, “Ah, what a pity!”
Firefighter: ......
If only you could hide that smile at the corner of your mouth, I might actually believe you.
The viewers in the livestream were equally speechless.
“This kid is way over the top!”
“He’s still pretending! He’d better hope his parents don’t actually buy him another set!”
“You’re the one laughing the hardest, and yet you’re acting all regretful.”
“Are kids these days really so shameless?”
“........”
Just then, Jiang Yun walked up to the boy.
His face carried a gentle smile. “Little one, what grade are you in now?”
The boy gave Jiang Yun a puzzled look, but remembering his parents were nearby, he wasn’t afraid. He held up two fingers. “Second grade.”
Jiang Yun’s eyes lit up at this. “Uncle knows you love doing homework, but I didn’t know which grade you were in. So earlier, I bought one copy each of all the winter and summer homework assignments for all six grades of elementary school. Do you like them?”
With that, Jiang Yun opened the black plastic bag in front of everyone, revealing it was packed full of homework.
The boy: !!!!!
At that moment, it was as if the air froze in silence.
Everyone’s mouths hung open as they stared at Jiang Yun and the pile of homework in his hands.
They were all adults; how could they not see through the boy’s little scheme? They just didn’t bother to call him out. Who could have expected Jiang Yun to actually go and buy every single winter and summer homework set for all six grades of elementary school?
The boy stared blankly at the mountain of homework before him, then stiffly looked up at Jiang Yun.
In his eyes, Jiang Yun’s gentle smile suddenly took on the aspect of a devil.
Is he even human?!
Are you even human?!
How could anyone do such a thing?!
Finally, the boy managed to pull out a hideous smile. “Thank you, uncle, but you really shouldn’t go to such trouble for me.”
He tried to hand the pile of homework back.
Without even thinking, Jiang Yun stepped back and said, “What are you saying? For the sake of nurturing the flowers of our nation, this is the least I can do! Besides, I’ve already torn up the receipts for these, so they can’t be returned. I don’t have kids myself, so there’s no use keeping them. You wouldn’t want me to just throw them away, would you?”
Throw them away! Please throw them away!
The boy desperately wanted to say this.
But then his father spoke up, “Xiaoman, this is your uncle’s kindness. How can you refuse?”
He even shot Jiang Yun a grateful smile. “Thank you, brother.”
Jiang Yun’s actions had eased the gloom of their home being burned, so he was genuinely thankful.
Jiang Yun waved it off. “No problem! Education is something we can never skimp on. All for the sake of nurturing the flowers of our nation!”
He then made an encouraging gesture toward the boy. “Keep it up!”
The boy looked at the heavy stack of homework in his hands, nearly in tears. “Tha...thank you, uncle!”
Viewers in the livestream were laughing themselves silly.
“See, I knew Brother Yun’s daily life is even more entertaining than his livestreams!”
“I’ve been annoyed at that kid for ages—finally, someone put him in his place!”
“I can’t even imagine how happy I’d have been as a child if I’d met someone like Brother Yun.”
“If I’d met Brother Yun as a kid, I’d remember him for the rest of my life!”
“Look at the kid’s face, he’s really about to cry.”
“........”
After some more pleasantries, Jiang Yun took his leave.
As he departed, he left the boy with a devilish silhouette that perhaps would be remembered for a lifetime.
Leaving the old neighborhood, Jiang Yun was about to head straight home, when a thought occurred to him.
He turned to the viewers and asked, “Hey, do you think the kids at the orphanage need some educational material? I’ve only ever bought them supplies for daily living, but I haven’t paid attention to their studies!”
His gaze became resolute. “Learning is the most important thing! Only education can change one’s fate! How could I have forgotten something so crucial?”
With that, Jiang Yun walked back to the shop where he’d bought the homework, and in front of more than a hundred thousand viewers, bought several hundred sets of winter and summer homework assignments in one go.
Seeing Jiang Yun’s actions, the viewers were stunned.
“Wait, huh???”
“Brother Yun, you grew up in an orphanage yourself—doesn’t your conscience hurt?”
“Put yourself in their shoes—would you have been happy receiving all this as a child?”
“Orphanage kids: I am truly ******”
“I can already picture the kids breaking down in despair.”
“...........”
Jiang Yun saw the comments and thought seriously.
“If I’d received these as a child... I would’ve been very happy! After all, I was a good kid who loved studying!”
He then flashed his big teeth at the stream, giving an extremely ‘bright’ smile.
“Hell is empty; the devils walk among us!”
“I wonder if the director ever regrets adopting Brother Yun.”
“Repaying kindness with vengeance, huh?”
“.........”
