Chapter 63: This Is What You Call Professionalism
The cameraman had been working in the industry for quite some time; just last year, he’d accompanied the director to Taiwan to shoot an MV. He hadn’t met many celebrities over there, and those who left an impression were surely top-tier stars. But how could Su Chen’s sister possibly be an A-list celebrity? The cameraman chuckled at his own thoughts, feeling he was overthinking it. After all, the girls from Taiwan tended to have similar accents, so it was perfectly normal to mishear.
Su Chen picked up Wang Bingling, handed her the milk tea he was holding, and the two of them walked out of the airport, chatting as they went. “By the way, who is this cameraman?” Wang Bingling asked. Su Chen replied, “He’s the one I mentioned last night. The show arranged for him to live-stream and follow me around today.” Upon hearing this, Wang Bingling smiled and greeted the cameraman and the lens, but didn’t immediately introduce herself. She wanted to build a bit of anticipation for Su Chen’s live-stream viewers. After all, Wang Bingling’s visit was meant to thank Su Chen.
“I wrapped my face so tightly and dressed so low-key. Normally, even my agent wouldn’t recognize me… How did you spot me right away?” Wang Bingling asked curiously. She was dressed very simply—a pair of white overalls with a black-and-white striped shirt underneath—looking just like any ordinary girl from Taiwan visiting the mainland. Su Chen laughed and responded, “I didn’t recognize you either.”
“Huh? You didn’t recognize me? Then how did you know it was me?” Wang Bingling was visibly puzzled. “There are only a handful of female celebrities from Taiwan with your height and build, and the odds of one of them flying to Shashi on the same flight as you are even smaller.” “So, I didn’t need to recognize you; I just needed to find the person in the crowd who looked most like a celebrity.” “Looked most like a celebrity?” Wang Bingling gasped, covering her mouth. “Su Chen, you can even tell that?” Su Chen looked at her oversized sunglasses, which covered most of her face, and the mask that concealed the rest, and said helplessly, “The way you look, you might as well have written ‘I am a celebrity’ across your face!”
“Eh-heh-heh…” Wang Bingling laughed awkwardly.
In the live-stream, the audience perked up upon hearing that Su Chen’s sister was also a celebrity, and started guessing feverishly.
“Is Su Chen’s sister a star from Taiwan? Her voice sounds so familiar!”
“Heh, you probably think all girls from Taiwan sound familiar, right? Let me borrow your phone to talk!”
“Can the annoying guys just shut up? The only person from Taiwan connected to Su Chen is Wang Bingling… Could it really be her?”
“No way! Absolutely not! The Sweetheart Princess is a top-tier star—she’s a household name in Taiwan. How could someone of Su Chen’s status invite her?”
“Hmm… yeah, that makes sense…”
Su Chen dragged Wang Bingling’s suitcase to the airport entrance, where Wang Bingling said, “Let’s drop our things at the hotel first. I booked the Hilton in the city center.” “Alright, I’ll call a cab. Just wait a moment, sis,” Su Chen said, opening the ride-hailing app. Wang Bingling had flown in from Taiwan early that morning. Though Su Chen didn’t own a car, he wouldn’t neglect the proper courtesies. He skipped the express car and saw no need for a luxury ride, so he booked a dedicated car from the airport to the city center. The model turned out to be a black Honda Accord.
“What a coincidence! We just rode an Accord here, and now we’re going back in another Accord,” Su Chen laughed. “And judging by the distance, it’s parked right in the airport lot. It’ll be here soon, so let’s just wait a bit longer, sis.” Su Chen knew Shashi’s weather was scorching, and Wang Bingling’s outfit must already be uncomfortable, so he kept speaking gently and fanned her with his jacket.
Fortunately, the Accord arrived at the pickup spot within moments. The driver, dressed in a suit, smiled and prepared to help Su Chen load the luggage in the trunk. But the moment their eyes met, both froze.
“What the—? Chen bro?!”
“No way! Dog bro?!”
Su Chen and the driver cried out in unison, leaving the cameraman dumbstruck and Wang Bingling utterly confused.
“What…what’s going on?” The cameraman was so astonished that he forgot Wu Tong’s warning not to speak and started explaining to Wang Bingling.
“Su Chen got up late today and had trouble getting a car to the airport to pick you up, so he ended up hitching a ride with a paparazzo he found by the roadside. But now, after booking a car back, it turns out to be the same paparazzo!”
Wang Bingling: ???
“Hitch…hitch a ride with the paparazzo?” Wang Bingling was even more bewildered after hearing this. How does a celebrity end up hitching a ride with a paparazzo?
“So you came here in a paparazzo’s car, and now you know this Didi driver too?” Wang Bingling felt her brain overheating as she managed to ask the question.
Unexpectedly, the cameraman was just as baffled. “I… I want to know too!”
While the two stared in disbelief, Su Chen and the paparazzo had already started chatting. It turned out the paparazzo wore many hats; being a dedicated car driver was just one of them. Since he was already at the airport and needed to return to the city, he figured he’d take a booking from the airport to the city, making some money while not missing any candid shots.
Su Chen was shocked after hearing his explanation. Was even being a paparazzo this competitive now?!
Seeing only the paparazzo in the car, Su Chen couldn’t help but ask, “Dog bro, where’s the dog junior who came with us?”
“He… after staking out all night, he was exhausted, so I booked him an hourly room near the airport to rest. Once he’s recovered, he’ll take over my shift tonight,” the paparazzo replied with a smile, still wearing the driver’s vest.
Wow, this really was a twenty-four-hour operation!
After finishing, the paparazzo bowed slightly to Su Chen, taking the luggage from his hands. “Hello, your dedicated Didi driver at your service. Please hand me your luggage and get in. The air conditioning has been set to the most comfortable temperature, and if you need anything, just let me know.” With that, he carried the luggage and placed it securely in the trunk.
The whole smooth process left Su Chen speechless with admiration.
Now this—this was professionalism!
