Chapter 146: This Is Not Something That Can Be Achieved by Luck Alone
"That’s right... Mr. Su didn't even perform an X-ray on the patient before the surgery... How on earth did he map out the organs inside the patient's chest cavity?!"
A doctor in the crowd exclaimed, leaving all the other physicians struck with disbelief. They hadn't realized the gravity of this point before, but once it was stated, everyone was stunned. It was as if Su Chen had driven an AE86 up Mount Akina while blindfolded, not only emerging unscathed but also setting a new world record for the fastest time! How the hell... was that even possible?
For a moment, no one could bring themselves to believe it, yet the evidence was right before their eyes, leaving them no choice but to accept it. The outpatient surgeon who had been standing by his seat remained frozen in place. He suddenly grasped what Old Shen had implied, but... the reality was simply too surreal.
The doctor swallowed hard, his voice trembling as he asked, "Old Shen, you don't mean that Mr. Su was able to map out the approximate location of the patient's internal organs just by those initial palpations of the chest, do you?"
Old Shen shook his head in response. Seeing the negation, the doctor let out a sigh of relief. Even though he had answered incorrectly again, he felt a sense of calm and relief. *Phew... I knew it, how could that be possible! I was overthinking it. How could anyone just press on someone and map out their internal organs through skin, flesh, and bone? That’s just impossible!*
However, just as the surgeon was feeling relieved, Old Shen, seeing that no one else stood up, finally revealed the answer. "Mr. Su’s technique didn't just map out the approximate location of the organs; he mapped out the entire anatomy with absolute clarity."
Old Shen’s words struck everyone like a thunderclap, leaving them utterly astounded. Anticipating their reaction, he continued, "As we all know, the human body is the most sophisticated machine in nature; the slightest error can cause it to collapse. Without a clear understanding, one could never perform a surgery like Mr. Su’s based on a mere vague orientation!"
"I can tell you quite clearly that in this surgery, Mr. Su not only avoided the most delicate organs in the chest cavity, but he even bypassed specific blood vessels and nerves!"
"Despite the lack of medical equipment and the use of a mere dagger as a scalpel, under Mr. Su's hands, the patient barely lost any blood, and the incision was less than two centimeters long!"
"These are all things you can see in the video; this is not something that can be achieved through mere luck!"
The doctors nodded in agreement, but immediately, a new question arose. How could Su Chen map out the patient’s organs and even blood vessels just by pressing on their chest? These are things that even an X-ray might not clearly reveal! In their eyes, if Su Chen’s technique was truly as Old Shen described, it was nothing short of supernatural. How could a human being possibly accomplish such a feat?
Looking at the incredulous faces before him, Old Shen smiled wryly. Truth be told, in the past, he wouldn't have believed such an outlandish medical skill existed either. He had first encountered it when he returned to his homeland to serve after completing his advanced medical training abroad.
Back then, he wasn't yet "Old Shen," but a dashing young man in his early twenties, full of spirit. Having just returned from abroad, he possessed knowledge and boldness far beyond his peers, which made him somewhat arrogant—a typical trait of youth. After returning, he began tackling difficult and complicated cases, ignoring anything he deemed mundane. However, the domestic medical standards and equipment were ultimately inferior to those abroad, and Old Shen soon hit a wall.
In a remote mountain village, he encountered a patient kicked in the chest by an ox. The man was in critical condition, suffering from severe internal hemorrhaging, and could not wait to be transported to a hospital. Old Shen was helpless; without equipment or a sterile environment, he couldn't even perform a thoracotomy to drain the blood. The high-spirited young man was forced to watch as the patient slowly drifted toward death. Faced with the villagers' accusations, he could only weep—it was the first time in his life he had felt so utterly impotent.
When the village chief realized the city doctor couldn't save the man, he had the patient carried to the local "barefoot doctor." When Old Shen heard the barefoot doctor claimed to have a solution, he was convinced it was a scam. Believing the man was committing murder rather than healing, he tried to intervene. But the chief ignored him, even having a few strong men tie Old Shen to a tree outside the practitioner’s home. He watched helplessly as the barefoot doctor pressed a few times on the patient's chest and then made an incision with a simple blade!
Then, the doctor turned the patient over and, right before Old Shen’s eyes, drained the blood from the chest! Old Shen begged and wailed, certain the patient was dead. Yet, when the sun set, he saw that same patient appearing before him, alive and kicking! He hadn't died! The barefoot doctor had saved him.
In that moment, Old Shen realized that there were mountains beyond mountains, and people beyond people. After that, he begged the barefoot doctor to teach him how to palpate internal organs and perform such perfect surgery. However, the practitioner looked down upon him for his initial hesitation and failure to act. No matter how many times Old Shen visited, the man refused to yield. Eventually, Old Shen had to return to the city. When he tried to return half a year later, he learned that the barefoot doctor had passed away, a regret that haunted him to this day.
Now, having rediscovered this ancient technique of bone-setting and visceral palpation, Old Shen was determined not to let it slip away again. He firmly believed that the traditional Chinese medicine of his homeland was in no way inferior to Western medicine.
