Chapter 144: Benefiting the People
As Elder Shen finished speaking, the doctors, who had been struggling to suppress their excitement upon seeing Su Chen take the stage, immediately erupted into cheers and applause.
"Su Chen!!! Oh!!!"
"Welcome to Changsha People's Hospital! Su Chen, you're so handsome!!!"
"Su Chen, Su Chen! Look over here!!!"
"Ahhh!!!"
The sudden uproar was so intense that it momentarily stunned Su Chen. He had not expected these "angels in white" to have such an excitable side. For a moment, he felt as though he were standing on the stage of the show *Star of Tomorrow*. It felt as if he were facing an audience invited by the production team rather than the doctors of Changsha People's Hospital. Yet, he was undeniably standing in a conference room at the hospital. Perhaps it was this stark contrast that made the experience feel so surreal.
"Hello everyone, hello everyone. I am Su Chen. My sudden visit is quite abrupt; I apologize for the intrusion."
Following Su Chen’s words, an even louder roar erupted in the conference room.
"Not an intrusion! Not at all!!!"
"Su Chen! Ahhh! Su Chen!!!"
"Su Chen, you are so gentle!!!"
"You must come more often! Changsha People's Hospital is your home now!!!"
Su Chen: "..."
Hearing a group of doctors shouting that "Changsha People's Hospital is your home," Su Chen couldn't help but feel a bit overwhelmed. If the hospital is my home, does that mean my bedroom is the ICU? Who would dare visit here often?
He was not the only one feeling the surreal nature of the situation; Elder Shen, standing beside him, felt it too. Having worked at the hospital for decades, this was the first time he had seen his junior colleagues act so unrestrained. Usually, they were serious, rigorous, and hurried; seeing them like this was truly rare.
However, it also proved that doctors are ordinary people, too, possessing their own joys, angers, sorrows, and delights. It was simply the nature of their work—constantly witnessing life and death—that made them seem so prematurely mature. Behind his helplessness, Elder Shen felt a sense of joy; in his eyes, these people were still just a bunch of children.
He gave them plenty of time to vent. After a minute or two, he finally called for order. "Alright, alright, everyone quiet down and let me finish!"
Elder Shen commanded great respect, and a single sentence was enough to silence the dozens of doctors in the room. Seeing this, he paused before continuing: "I know you are all very excited and welcoming of Mr. Su Chen's visit to our hospital. However, Mr. Su is not here just for a meet-and-greet; he is here to benefit society!"
Elder Shen’s words made the crowd widen their eyes, but they gave Su Chen goosebumps. *How am I benefiting society? I'm just here to teach a little—or perhaps not even teach, just exchange ideas. How did it become so lofty in Elder Shen’s mouth? Elder Shen really... knows how to phrase things!*
Amidst Su Chen's awkward yet polite smile, Elder Shen continued: "I believe you have all seen the video of Mr. Su saving a life that night, haven't you?"
The question was met with enthusiastic responses.
"We've seen it!"
"Su Chen was so cool that night. Not only can he fight, but he can also save lives. He is truly a man of both martial and literary arts!"
"Exactly, Su Chen is an idol we should be proud of!"
Elder Shen smiled, quieted the noise again, and posed his question: "Then do you know what Mr. Su relied on, and how he saved that elderly man?"
The room suddenly fell silent. Gradually, some of the more experienced and knowledgeable doctors tentatively offered their thoughts. Elder Shen selected the doctor closest to him, who was also the most eager, to stand and answer.
The doctor was visibly excited to be chosen. He stood up, suppressing his nerves, and said earnestly: "Actually, we all understand that the elder's crisis was caused by life-threatening asphyxiation. Therefore, I believe Mr. Su used a straw to allow the elder's lungs direct contact with the air, thereby stabilizing his blood oxygen levels, which is how he saved him."
Hearing this, Elder Shen nodded approvingly. "You are correct. It seems your foundational skills are sharp."
"However, you only explained the principle; you didn't answer the core question of what Mr. Su relied upon to save the man."
The doctor thought for a moment and said uncertainly, "The straw?"
As soon as he said this, low chuckles rippled through the room. Elder Shen shook his head at the right moment. "Incorrect."
"Does anyone else know the answer?"
Faced with Elder Shen's question, the room fell into silence again. Compared to the doctors from other departments who were just observing, the surgeons began to rack their brains. The surgery Su Chen performed was a standard surgical procedure—so standard, in fact, that it could be listed as a teaching case.
Finally, after a long silence, a surgeon stood up. "What allowed Mr. Su to save the man must have been his master-level surgical technique. Without the support of medical equipment and in an extreme surgical environment, Mr. Su perfectly completed the procedure. That must be the most critical link in him saving the elder."
Hearing this, the other doctors nodded subconsciously, finding the argument logical. However, Elder Shen shook his head again.
"You have a point and have identified the correct direction, but that is not the core of what made this perfect surgery possible."
"Let me give you a hint: try to broaden your thinking, starting from the surgery itself, to find the answer."
After Elder Shen dismissed the surgeon's answer, all the doctors were left in a state of confusion. If the success of the surgery wasn't the key to saving the elder, then what was?
Another silence followed—this one longer than the previous two. The doctors didn't just sit there; they began to discuss in small groups. But as time ticked by, nearly five minutes passed, and they still hadn't found an answer that satisfied everyone.
Elder Shen looked at the time and sighed, preparing to reveal the answer. Just then, a young woman from the Traditional Chinese Medicine department stood up from the crowd.
She said, "Perhaps... was it the technique Mr. Su used to press the elder's chest before the surgery?"
