Chapter 5: Never Again
The things Sheng Yang mentioned were useless. They were probably little gifts Wen Jin had once given him—expensive cufflinks she had painstakingly saved for half a year to buy, and talismans for safety that she had begged for on her knees. But to Sheng Yang, these items were truly worthless and cheap. Just as the internet said, she had nothing—only a heart that loved Sheng Yang.
Hearing this herself, Wen Jin found it bitterly ironic. There was really nothing she could offer. So she said, “Since they’re all useless, just throw them away.”
The phone kept ringing, but Wen Jin turned and went straight into the kitchen, ignoring Sheng Yang. She hadn’t eaten dinner yet, and her stomach was already starting to feel uneasy.
She rummaged through the fridge and pulled out a bag of wontons. As she waited for the water to boil, she heard Sheng Yang talking outside—probably to Wen You.
Once the water began bubbling, she heard the sound of a door closing. Sheng Yang had left.
Wen Jin slowly dropped the wontons into the pot. When she put in the last one, she misjudged her strength and splashing water landed on the knuckle of her ring finger.
She instinctively pulled her hand back and wiped the water off, revealing a small, darkened scar. The mark was tiny, nestled in the crease of the joint, invisible unless one looked closely.
Pressing the spot with her fingertip, Wen Jin’s lips tightened. That scar was caused by Wen You. It was also where her story with Sheng Yang had begun.
—
The next day, Wen Jin went to the company as usual to hand over her work. While she was organizing the files as required, a colleague came over and said that Sister Shuang wanted her in the conference room.
Wen Jin knocked on the door and when she looked up, her eyes met Sheng Yang’s.
Sister Shuang called her in. “Come in quickly. This is the client for the wedding planning you handled last time.”
Wen Jin stepped inside but sat beside Sister Shuang, showing no intention of speaking with Sheng Yang.
Sister Shuang explained, “Wen Jin, President Sheng wanted to review the general plan for the upcoming wedding and verify some details.”
“Also, we need feedback from President Sheng about the engagement party. Since you were in charge, this task falls to you.”
New Moon Design Studio truly prioritized their clients. Sister Shuang didn’t even know the relationship between Wen Jin and Sheng Yang.
Although Wen Jin had resigned, she still needed to finalize Sheng Yang’s engagement party arrangements, so she didn’t refuse.
After setting things in order, Sister Shuang left, leaving only Wen Jin and Sheng Yang in the room.
Wen Jin opened her folder without looking up. “If you have any questions about the engagement party or wedding, President Sheng, you may speak directly.”
Sheng Yang sat across from her, tapping his fingers on the table. “You were responsible for my and Wen You’s engagement party?”
Wen Jin kept her eyes on the documents. “Yes. Do you think something was wrong?”
She maintained a professional demeanor: detached yet polite.
Sheng Yang’s brow furrowed slightly.
Since they were at the office, Wen Jin wore a simple white sweater, her long black hair loosely tied into a low ponytail. Her skin was fair, and her eyelashes long and thick. Words like gentle and graceful suited her well. She was quiet and obedient, always giving a sense of calm.
Otherwise, Sheng Yang wouldn’t have kept her by his side for three years. He was notoriously proud and picky.
Feeling Sheng Yang’s gaze fixed on her, Wen Jin met his eyes and spoke slowly and clearly, “May I ask if you have any objections to the engagement party plan I designed for you?”
She had personally overseen everything—from the plan to the decoration. She had wanted to surprise Sheng Yang.
Wen Jin clenched her pen tightly, forcing down the emotions swelling inside her.
After all, she and Sheng Yang no longer had any connection.
Instead of answering, Sheng Yang smirked. “If I had any objections, shouldn’t you already know?”
He raised an eyebrow, his voice cool. “You ruined my engagement party.”
Wen Jin froze, her eyelashes trembling uncontrollably.
—
Sheng Yang glanced at her and said lightly, “But it was just a formality. My wedding with Wen You will proceed as scheduled.”
“Do you have any requests or ideas about your wedding?”
Wen Jin mechanically reported all the details according to the process.
When it was finally over, she felt exhausted.
She packed up the files and prepared to leave.
Sheng Yang followed her out of the conference room, his tone casual as if nothing had happened. “Let’s have lunch together.”
Wen Jin refused, “I’m still busy.”
Besides, she didn’t want to eat with him.
Sheng Yang blocked her path. “What could an intern be busy with?”
But just as he spoke, Sister Shuang came out of her office.
She greeted Sheng Yang and then looked at Wen Jin. “Are you done? Good, come over and we’ll go over your resignation handover.”
Sheng Yang’s expression darkened. He reached out and grabbed Wen Jin’s wrist. “You’re quitting?”
There was a dangerous gleam in his eyes.
Wen Jin was startled—she hadn’t expected Sister Shuang to bring it up—but she quickly composed herself.
She knew Sheng Yang had a twisted personality and wouldn’t allow anything beyond his control to happen.
He had entrusted Wen Jin with his wedding, and now she was resigning.
It was a provocation.
Not wanting to cause uncontrollable trouble, Wen Jin lowered her gaze and said slowly, “A colleague is leaving, and I just need to hand over her work.”
Seeing Sheng Yang still staring at her, Wen Jin looked away and forced a bitter smile. “I have no family here in Jing City. I wouldn’t dare play the runaway gold-digger game—you know that.”
Sheng Yang loosened his grip on her wrist and took a step back. He said slowly, “That makes sense.”
Wen Jin had no standing to play games with him.
