Chapter 48 Secretary Wen
The project manager sighed helplessly. "There's nothing we can do. We'll just have to take the initiative ourselves."
Wen Jin nodded. "I understand."
The manager simply meant delivering the relevant project documents to them, which wasn't a troublesome task, so Wen Jin didn't refuse.
She genuinely loved the content of this job; she wasn't about to give it up just because of Sheng Yang. Besides, the Sheng family's business empire spanned across virtually every industry. If Wen Jin wanted to return to her original career path, she would inevitably cross paths with them sooner or later. Her only concern was whether Sheng Yang would use his position to settle personal scores.
Early the next morning, Wen Jin printed out the documents and prepared to head to Lingyue Corporation. However, as soon as she stepped downstairs, she ran into Ning Lang.
Ning Lang greeted her with a smile. "Where are you going? Can I give you a ride?"
Wen Jin declined. "No need to trouble yourself."
"I don't mind you troubling me," Ning Lang replied with a grin.
Wen Jin took a deep breath, wanting to make her stance clear to him once and for all. But Ning Lang cut her off a step ahead. "Don't be in such a hurry to brush me off. I'm really not that bad."
"I'm not brushing you off."
"Then are you trying to brush yourself off?"
Ning Lang seemed to possess a certain magic; any words that came out of his mouth always felt light and effortless. Without waiting for her reply, he simply pulled Wen Jin closer and glanced at the files in her hand. "I think you might as well save yourself the trouble and stop wasting time."
Feeling helpless, Wen Jin could only say, "I have to go to Lingyue."
Ning Lang never pried into what she was doing. After driving her to Lingyue, he simply told her to call him when she was finished so he could come pick her up, and then he left.
Unexpectedly, the moment Wen Jin prepared to head upstairs, she ran straight into Sheng Yang. He was standing a short distance away, his head tilted slightly, watching her with amused interest. Yet, deep within his eyes, the emotions hidden beneath the surface were unfathomable.
Wen Jin pressed her lips into a thin line. Deciding to approach him with the files, she adopted a strictly professional tone and called out, "Mr. Sheng."
Sheng Yang raised his chin slightly, and the playful look from just a moment ago vanished, as if it had merely been a trick of Wen Jin's eyes.
Wen Jin steadied her composure and opened her mouth to speak, but before she could, a man resembling a secretary hurried over, panting heavily. He was also holding a stack of documents.
"Mr. Sheng, all the documents have been compiled. The person in charge at the Chamber of Commerce just called to ask if you will be attending tonight's dinner banquet. If you are definitely going, I will go to the secretariat to make the arrangements. Shen Ruai hasn't returned from his business trip yet, so we can substitute—"
"Substitute her."
Sheng Yang raised his chin slightly and looked at Wen Jin.
The secretary froze for a moment before turning to look at Wen Jin up and down. "Are you a new intern?"
Wen Jin's expression faltered, and her brows instantly furrowed. "I am not an employee of Lingyue."
Sheng Yang strode forward without hesitation. "You are now."
With that, he walked away, looking thoroughly busy. Having worked under Sheng Yang for so long, Chen Jin could easily tell that Sheng Yang was doing this on purpose. The look he cast at Wen Jin carried a hint of appraisal.
Sensing his gaze, Wen Jin stated directly, "I'm sorry, I am not a Lingyue employee, and I have no intention of accompanying anyone to any dinner banquets."
Chen Jin pulled a bitter face. "Miss, please, consider this a favor. I can tell that you and Mr. Sheng know each other."
Wen Jin wanted to retort, but Chen Jin was already glancing at his watch while clutching the documents, rushing off in a panic. Before hurrying past her, he didn't forget to instruct someone to escort Wen Jin to Sheng Yang's office.
Wen Jin still needed to hand the documents over to Sheng Yang. She had no choice but to follow the arrangements, figuring she could just clarify things later.
However, once she got upstairs, she didn't even get to see Sheng Yang's face. He was tied up in one meeting after another, without a single moment of rest.
This was the first time Wen Jin had ever witnessed Sheng Yang at work. There had been many times in the past when she had expressed a desire to visit Lingyue or accompany him while he worked. But Sheng Yang had always rejected her under the pretext that she knew nothing about business. Deep down, he had always looked down on her. Yet Wen Jin, foolish as she was, had tried desperately to prove herself to him.
She waited until noon, but Sheng Yang never came out. Wen Jin took her files and walked outside, hoping to find someone to ask about the other project managers, but no one answered her. Everyone hurried past her in a rush of purposeful strides.
Helpless, Wen Jin had no choice but to keep waiting.
The wait stretched straight into the afternoon. The moment Sheng Yang finally emerged, Wen Jin clutched her documents and hurried up to him.
"Mr. Sheng—"
Before she could finish, she was met with Sheng Yang's ice-cold voice: "Are you playing some kind of cosplay game with me? Haven't you had enough of this act, and now you want to try a different method?"
All of Wen Jin's words were blocked right back in her throat.
Nearby, Chen Jin whispered a warning, "Mr. Sheng just finished a multinational conference and his mood isn't very good. You'd better not provoke him."
Looking at Sheng Yang's cold, sharp profile, Wen Jin tightened her grip on the files. People from her company had mentioned that Sheng Yang had reservations about this particular project to begin with. She pressed her lips together and said in a low voice, "Since that's the case, I'll come back tomorrow."
She tried to leave, but Sheng Yang caught her by the wrist. His breathing was heavy, and his entire demeanor radiated displeasure. Evidently, his assistant hadn't lied; he truly had lost his temper just now.
"Since you're already here, why are you leaving?"
Wen Jin said, "I came here on official business. Yangcheng—"
Before she could finish, Sheng Yang interrupted her again, tightening his grip on her wrist. "Did you forget what I told you this morning? Or are you too busy rushing off on a date with Ning Lang?"
Wen Jin was practically shoved into the car by Sheng Yang, her expression turning extremely unsightly. "When are you ever going to learn how to respect others?"
"Respecting others doesn't mean respecting you."
Wen Jin averted her gaze. When Sheng Yang was in a fit of rage, he was truly unreasonable. There was no point in arguing with him. She simply let him drag her to the dinner banquet.
However, right before entering the private dining room, Wen Jin stopped in her tracks and looked up at Sheng Yang. "Aren't you afraid someone will tell Wen You about what happens today?"
Sheng Yang had brought her to this banquet, yet he wasn't attending it with Wen You. If Wen You found out, there would undoubtedly be another scene.
Sheng Yang let out a sneer. "Trying to sow discord again?"
Wen Jin replied, "Just offering a kind reminder."
"Then I suppose I should thank you for your reminder."
With that, Sheng Yang pushed the door open decisively.
Wen You was already seated inside.
Sheng Yang said indifferently, "Did you really think Wen You is like you, needing to rely on men to get into a banquet like this?"
As his voice trailed off, he stepped inside.
Wen Jin stood at the doorway, hearing him say unhurriedly, "Secretary Wen, are you not coming in?"
