Chapter 46: No Blood Relation
The conflict between the Wen family and Wen Jin caused quite a stir, and now everyone in the upper circles is waiting for the final outcome.
Some have even set up private wagers, eager to see if Wen Jin will ultimately have to kneel and beg for forgiveness from Wen Tao.
Zhao Yimo came by today specifically to fish for news.
Sheng Yang lifted his eyelids and gave him an expressionless glance. "Have all your company's documents been prepared?"
Zhao Yimo clicked his tongue. "Can't you take a joke?"
His only reply was Sheng Yang's frigid voice: "If you have nothing to do, get out."
Instead of leaving, Zhao Yimo simply pulled up a chair and sat down right inside the office.
"I actually came here to bring you some intelligence," he said, "though looking at you, you don't seem to need it."
Sheng Yang didn't even raise his head, maintaining a completely indifferent attitude.
Realizing he couldn't pique Sheng Yang's interest, Zhao Yimo had no choice but to spill the beans himself. "Wen Jin is suing the Wen family for defamation. The lawyer taking the case is a friend of Qiangzi."
That finally made Sheng Yang look up. He fixed his gaze on Zhao Yimo. "Who else knows about this?"
"No one else, just me and Qiangzi."
Sheng Yang halted his movements. He closed his eyes, his jaw clenched tight, looking somewhat irritated.
To make matters worse, Zhao Yimo added, "I heard Ning Lang is still introducing lawyers to her."
It went without saying who Ning Lang might introduce a lawyer to.
The atmosphere in the entire office seemed to plummet instantly.
A moment later, just as Zhao Yimo was about to say something more, he met Sheng Yang's gaze.
"Anything else?" Sheng Yang asked calmly.
The subtext was clear: if there's nothing else, leave.
After visiting Wenchao Sheng in prison, Wen Jin came out to find Ning Lang still waiting for her.
Ning Lang didn't press her with questions, simply asking, "Are you heading straight back, or would you like to go somewhere to clear your head first?"
Wen Jin replied, "I should go back to the Sheng residence. The matter with the household registration book still needs to be sorted out."
The company in Yangcheng had already started asking her if she could report to work ahead of schedule.
She hoped to settle matters here as quickly as possible and return south.
To her surprise, Ning Lang paused mid-step. "The household registration book?"
"My household registration is still tied to the Sheng family. I want to transfer it out."
Ning Lang fell silent for a brief moment before his expression returned to normal.
He nodded readily. "You're right. If you need any help, you can come to me."
Wen Jin almost declined. She still couldn't figure out what Ning Lang's intentions were and wanted to avoid any unnecessary trouble.
However, her phone rang at that exact moment.
It was a call from Jiang Yuan.
Wen Jin hadn't saved Jiang Yuan under any contact name, but that string of numbers was already deeply etched into her memory.
She murmured a word to Ning Lang and turned away to answer the call.
Jiang Yuan's gentle voice sounded from the other end: "Xiaojin, I've returned to the country."
Wen Jin let out a soft "en" and remained silent.
A hint of apology crept into Jiang Yuan's tone. "However, right after returning, I have to attend a meeting, so I'm not in Jingcheng just yet."
Seeming accustomed to this behavior, Wen Jin didn't press further. She simply said, "This is your work; you don't need to explain it to me."
"Wait for me," Jiang Yuan comforted her. "Once I finish handling my affairs, I'll take you away from this place."
"Mother won't let you suffer any more grievances, alright? As compensation, I bought you a limited-edition bag from Chanel..."
Wen Jin cut her off directly. "There's no need. I don't use luxury goods."
"How can you not use luxury goods? Aren't you staying with the Sheng family—"
Jiang Yuan sounded somewhat incredulous.
Without waiting for more, Wen Jin hung up the phone.
She knew that Jiang Yuan hadn't called to talk about any limited-edition luxury bag.
She had simply called to inform her, once again, that she wouldn't be able to see her on time.
This was Jiang Yuan's habitual way of doing things.
She always had numerous matters demanding her attention, and Wen Jin's name could never rank high on her schedule.
After ending the call and returning, Ning Lang didn't ask her anything about it.
He simply opened the car door for her. "I'll drive you back."
This time, Wen Jin didn't refuse.
Yet halfway through the drive, Ning Lang suddenly broke the silence. "Actually, I still don't understand what you ever saw in Sheng Yang."
Keeping her eyes fixed on the road ahead, Wen Jin replied, "I recall you weren't talking like that when we were standing in front of Sheng Yang and Zhao Yimo earlier."
Back then, he had claimed he had no idea Sheng Yang and Wen Jin were in a relationship.
Caught in the act, Ning Lang didn't look the least bit embarrassed.
After pondering for a moment, he explained, "I just felt that under those circumstances, saying that would be much more infuriating."
Wen Jin fell silent.
Because of the matter concerning the household registration, Wen Jin felt somewhat nervous.
She deliberated for a long time in her heart before finally stepping inside the old family residence.
Yet the moment she brought the subject up, the old master's brows furrowed deeply. "Must you transfer your household registration out?"
Lowering her gaze to avoid looking at the old master, Wen Jin answered, "Since my work from now on will be in Yangcheng, there will likely be quite a few occasions where I need the household registration document."
"Even so, there's no need to transfer it," the old master stated. "Xiaojin, a household registration in Jingcheng is something many people spend a lifetime trying to obtain."
To be honest, Wen Jin was somewhat taken aback.
She hadn't expected the old master to reject her outright.
Just as she was about to speak again, Sheng Yang walked in.
He must have come straight from the company, still dressed in a formal, impeccably tailored suit.
Yet as his gaze lowered and fell upon Wen Jin, the coldness in his eyes diluted his stern demeanor quite a bit.
The moment the old master saw him return, he immediately said, "Just in time—you can persuade Xiaojin. She insists on moving her household registration out."
Sheng Yang showed little reaction. "She was never a member of the Sheng family to begin with; there's no necessity to share a household registration book."
Hearing those words, the old master's expression changed drastically.
He rebuked sternly, "What kind of nonsense are you uttering! Xiaojin grew up alongside you all these years; how is she not part of the family?"
"Without any blood ties, what kind of family is that?" Sheng Yang retorted coolly.
The old master's face darkened with anger, and the housekeeper hurried forward to steady him.
Sheng Yang cast his gaze directly at Wen Jin. "Come with me. I have something to ask you."
Wen Jin didn't move. "Whatever you have to say can be said right here just as well."
She wanted nothing to do with spending time alone with Sheng Yang.
Sheng Yang let out a dry, scornful laugh, glanced at the old master, and clicked his tongue. "Are you certain what you've done is fit to be discussed in front of Grandfather?"
Wen Jin could easily detect the threat hidden beneath his words.
After a brief moment of silence, she stood up and followed Sheng Yang away.
The moment they left, the old master's expression collapsed completely.
He looked toward the housekeeper and declared, "We cannot allow Xiaojin to be removed from the Sheng family registry. I will not permit it."
Meanwhile, Wen Jin followed Sheng Yang into the study. The second the door closed behind them, she heard him ask, "Whose courage gave you the nerve to go and sue the Wen family?"
