Chapter 19: Drawing the Line
Sheng Yang’s voice carried a chill in the evening breeze. His gaze toward Wen Jin lacked any warmth.
Wen Jin found it strange. She couldn’t understand why Sheng Yang was here, and she wasn’t foolish enough to think he had come specifically to wait for her outside her office building. Yet this time, she had misjudged.
Seeing her still frozen in place, Sheng Yang pressed his brows together slightly. “What are you still holding on to, Qiao?”
She hadn’t returned to Meiyuan, nor did she have anywhere else to go. The fact that he had come to pick her up was already giving her a chance to save face.
Sheng Yang prided himself on not being a patient man. He had shown Wen Jin the greatest tolerance, yet she seemed ungrateful.
His emotions stirred within his chest. “Get in the car.”
Startled back to reality, Wen Jin whispered, “I have some things to handle at the office tonight. You don’t need to worry about me.”
“Do you think I want to?” Sheng Yang’s tone deepened, his eyes fixed on her, missing none of her reactions. “Zhao Yimo said you left his room, and he’s afraid you’ll cause trouble for him.”
Mentioning Zhao Yimo immediately reminded Wen Jin of the awkward and humiliating atmosphere in the suite.
She looked up at Sheng Yang. “Did you send Zhao Yimo to find me?”
She wanted an answer, but Sheng Yang disliked the accusatory tone in her words.
Leaning against the car, his gaze was cold and detached, as if looking at a pretty toy displayed in a shop window, devoid of any real feeling.
“You can’t even handle Zhao Yimo, yet you still fantasize about other options?”
His words were a clear response to Wen Jin.
Her eyelashes trembled involuntarily. She nodded wryly. “So, you’re already lining up my next buyer?”
“Whether as a boyfriend or any other role, few can match your level.”
She seriously critiqued Sheng Yang’s approach, but his cold, hostile expression only deepened.
Taking a few steps forward, Sheng Yang raised his hand to grip Wen Jin’s chin, forcing her to meet his gaze.
His voice was stern, heavy with intimidation. “If you want to degrade yourself, that’s your choice. But don’t disgust me.”
Wen Jin wanted to retort, questioning who was really degrading whom.
But Sheng Yang’s strength was overwhelming, silencing her completely.
She could only look at him directly.
Just then, her phone rang. She glanced sideways at it.
Before she could react, Sheng Yang snatched the phone away.
With one hand restraining her chin, he toyed with her phone in the other.
His gaze darkened as he stared at the screen, reading the message slowly and deliberately: “Miss Wen, it’s a pleasure to meet you. I hope we can get to know each other better.”
After reading, he suddenly smiled, then pressed harder on Wen Jin’s chin. “Hmm? Miss Wen?”
Wen Jin closed her eyes and mustered all her strength to break free from Sheng Yang.
She stepped back several paces, putting distance between them.
Straightening her back, she looked at him and said, “This is my private matter. It’s none of your business.”
Sheng Yang’s aura grew colder. He stared at Wen Jin. “Is flirting with other men just your private affair?”
Wen Jin thought Sheng Yang was being unreasonable.
He was the one who had just suggested she hook up with Zhao Yimo, yet now he was angry simply because she met someone else.
Still, now was indeed a good moment to clarify.
She calmed her emotions and said, “Whether it’s Zhao Yimo or anyone else, Sheng Yang, this is actually my private matter, isn’t it?”
“You and Wen You are getting married, and I will get married too. Everything between us should end here.”
Behind her, the streetlamp cast light from above, as if separating them into two different worlds.
Speaking the words she had buried deep inside felt like a stone falling from her chest. She exhaled softly.
Sheng Yang remained expressionless. “Drawing a clear line from me?”
Wen Jin frowned, about to say that they should have already severed ties completely.
But Sheng Yang sneered, arrogantly stepping back into the shadows, chin raised, his expression unreadable as he looked at her.
“Who gave you the audacity to show off in front of me?”
With that, he got into his car.
In the next moment, the engine roared impatiently as Sheng Yang sped away.
Wen Jin stood there for a while before turning back into the office.
She thought wryly, no wonder Qiao Qiao sometimes said she had incredible patience.
With Sheng Yang’s unpredictable nature, she had somehow managed to keep him appeased all these years.
But from now on—
There would be no “from now on.”
Lowering her eyelids, she replied to the message from the person her aunt had introduced.
She still underestimated just how furious Sheng Yang could become.
—
Originally, she had only agreed to help Sister Shuang cover Sister Jing’s workload temporarily. Wen Jin’s time at New Moon wouldn’t be long.
The wedding of Sheng Yang and Wen You shouldn’t have assigned her too many tasks.
Looking at the pile of documents before her, Wen Jin frowned. “Sister Shuang, isn’t it inappropriate to assign all these to me?”
Ming Yue Shuang was also frustrated. She knew well the real reason Wen Jin was leaving, but the client insisted on dealing with her.
Helplessly, she said, “I’ll try to negotiate with the client quickly. You’ll have to work hard for these couple of days.”
Wen Jin knew all too well this was a deliberate move by Wen You and Sheng Yang.
Though she didn’t want to drag New Moon into trouble, she had to clarify things with Sister Shuang first to avoid complications later.
After hesitating, Wen Jin said, “Sister Shuang, I’m the one causing trouble for the company. It’s probably because of me that—”
Before she could finish, she was interrupted.
Ming Yue Shuang glanced at her calmly. “Don’t take everything on yourself. They only want you to be responsible because they think you’re capable.”
Wen Jin’s words caught in her throat. Ming Yue Shuang said, “Enough. Go do your own work. At the office, focus on your job. Outside, it’s none of your concern.”
The implication was unmistakable.
She thought things would rest there, nothing more to worry about.
But in the afternoon, Wen You came by.
She specifically demanded to see Wen Jin.
When Wen Jin arrived, Wen You was holding a coffee cup, reviewing the revisions New Moon had submitted earlier.
Seeing Wen Jin enter, Wen You set down the cup forcefully, the sharp sound echoing.
“The capability of the New Moon design team makes me doubt them. Wen Jin, can you give me a satisfactory explanation?”
Wen Jin steadied herself and stepped forward. “Miss Wen, if there are aspects you’re unsatisfied with, we can discuss them again.”
Wen You glanced at her with raised eyelids, lips curling into a slight sneer. “The lighting issue—I already gave feedback last time. Why is it still the same? Do you really listen to the client’s demands?”
Wen Jin hesitated. “I reported on the lighting issue to you a few days ago.”
She had already given Wen You the revised plan back at Meiyuan.
It was Wen You who hadn’t reviewed it.
Wen You’s mocking expression deepened. “So you’re saying it’s my problem? But Wen Jin, should I remind you that your work should be done during work hours, not encroaching on my personal time?”
If Wen Jin couldn’t see that Wen You was deliberately provoking her, she would be truly foolish.
She calmed her emotions and said, “Sorry, I’ll provide feedback now.”
She was about to retrieve the documents, but Wen You lifted her hand to block the other side.
On her exquisitely beautiful face appeared the same arrogance as Sheng Yang’s.
Her lips curved as she slowly spoke, “Sometimes I wonder if you still harbor unrealistic fantasies about Sheng Yang, which is why you deliberately want to sabotage our wedding?”
