Chapter 16: Returning to Yangcheng in a Few Days
In the end, Sheng Yang personally carried Wen Jin back to her room.
Wen Jin stood in the living room, showing no particular reaction.
She only recalled one thing: Sheng Yang detested the smell of alcohol and disliked being troubled by Wen Jin.
In this social circle, even though Wen Jin was merely a tenant living temporarily with the Sheng family,
there was no avoiding social engagements at the annual Sheng family gatherings.
Moreover, most of the time, it was Old Master Sheng himself who accompanied her.
She had her moments of drunkenness, but she clearly remembered Sheng Yang’s reaction then.
It was disdain, dissatisfaction, and his cold, biting words: “Clean yourself up before showing your face to me again. Don’t make me sick.”
Memories were complicated, and thinking about them was exhausting.
So, Wen Jin simply chose not to dwell on them.
Just as Sheng Yang said, how could she compare herself to Wen You?
Wen You was the precious daughter of the family, while she was just an ordinary person.
Wen You was the destined daughter-in-law of the Sheng family, while she was only the daughter of the family’s housekeeper.
If it weren’t for Old Master Sheng’s kindness, she would likely have ended up the same way as her parents.
So she had to be content.
After Sheng Yang took Wen You upstairs, he never came down again.
Wen Jin had no choice but to wait in the living room.
She shouldn’t have come to Meiyuan in the first place and certainly couldn’t move about freely.
There were plenty of housekeepers in Meiyuan, and if she did anything out of line, Old Master Sheng would be informed immediately.
It wasn’t until the next morning, just before Wen Jin was about to leave for work, that Wen You finally came downstairs.
Ignoring the obvious fact she had changed into fresh pajamas, Wen Jin took out the revised plan from her bag and handed it over.
“This is the adjustment that Xinyue made based on your requests.”
“I wanted to give it to you yesterday, but you were busy and I didn’t get the chance.”
Wen You looked at her, furrowing her brows slightly before relaxing them again.
“Isn’t it a bit too eager to show me work first thing in the morning?”
Wen Jin replied, “I’m heading to the company soon. If you have any questions, you can give immediate feedback. That way, we can save a lot of time.”
“I see.” Wen You took the file but didn’t open it. Instead, she tossed it onto a nearby table.
She leisurely poured herself a glass of water and said, “I heard from Sheng Yang that during my stay at Meiyuan, you’ll be responsible for taking care of some of my daily needs, right?”
“Then there’s no rush. We’ll have plenty of time to meet, and you can give me feedback slowly.”
With that, she lifted the glass and turned to walk upstairs.
Wen Jin instinctively followed her gaze and saw Sheng Yang appear.
He wore the same style of pajamas as Wen You’s but in a different color, the collar wide open, exuding a lazy just-got-up look.
Their eyes met briefly; his gaze paused slightly but remained unchanged.
Wen Jin withdrew her eyes and didn’t look any further. She left to go to the company.
Having not slept all night, she felt a little dizzy and unwell. Turning around, she experienced a brief dizziness but quickly recovered.
Just outside Meiyuan’s gate, she saw Qiao Qiao’s car parked opposite.
Since it was difficult to hail a taxi here, Wen Jin had contacted Qiao Qiao early to ask for a ride.
Qiao Qiao looked at Meiyuan and clicked her tongue in amazement.
“To be honest, this is my first time at Meiyuan. You can’t just have money to live here.”
Meiyuan was more like a class hierarchy within high society.
It wasn’t just about wealth — you needed power and influence as well.
Wen Jin smiled and said, “Then maybe you should buy a place here for me to live someday?”
“I really can’t be relied upon for that,” Qiao Qiao said with a chuckle, not seriously enamored with Meiyuan either.
She also understood that Wen Jin was here under Sheng Yang’s pressure and didn’t press further.
After dropping Wen Jin off at the company, Qiao Qiao arranged to have dinner with her that evening, saying she wanted to buy a gift for their boss.
Wen Jin nodded in agreement, thinking she should bring some gifts back for her aunt as well.
Just after Qiao Qiao left, Wen Jin’s phone rang.
Seeing the caller ID was Old Master Sheng’s, her heart immediately tightened.
She found a quiet place before answering.
The old man’s strong, clear voice came through at once.
“Xiao Jin, I heard Sheng Yang took you to Meiyuan, is that true?”
Wen Jin responded respectfully, “Last night Wen You got drunk. He asked me to go help.”
“Is that so?” The old man’s voice clearly softened a bit. “But it’s good for you and Wen You to get to know each other better. You young people will need to help each other in the future.”
After a pause, he added, “By the way, Xiao Jin, when are you planning to return to Yangcheng? I remember it’s just a few days from now?”
“Yes, Grandfather Sheng, in a few days.”
“Before you leave, come home and have a meal with me. After all, I’ve watched you grow up.”
Old Master Sheng spoke kindly, but Wen Jin softly declined.
“I won’t disturb you. The steward said you need to rest, and with Sheng Yang and Wen You’s wedding approaching, you must have many things to attend to.”
“My little matters are nothing for you to worry about.”
Hearing her say that, the old man’s tone grew even gentler, no longer probing.
They exchanged a few polite words before Wen Jin hung up.
Her lowered lashes concealed the fatigue in her eyes.
Everyone said she was lucky to be taken in by the Sheng family.
But the truth was, she was more afraid than anyone of making mistakes or saying the wrong thing, worried that if she displeased the Sheng family, she’d be branded an ungrateful wretch.
Wen Jin let out a slow breath.
She looked down at her palm, slowly clenching and then releasing it.
After repeating this a few times, she finally lifted her foot and headed toward the company.
Soon—
She would no longer have to tread so cautiously, constantly reading others’ expressions to guess their true intentions.
What she hadn’t expected was that that afternoon, while shopping for gifts with Qiao Qiao, she would run directly into Sheng Yang.
