Chapter 10: Happy Breakup
Jojo and Wen Jin had been friends for many years, so she could easily see what Wen Jin was thinking now. But seeing Wen Jin like this, Jojo didn’t know what to say, so she swallowed her words.
Jojo had just returned from further studies, and her promotion was confirmed. However, after learning about Wen Jin’s situation with Sheng Yang, Jojo canceled her own celebration party and took Wen Jin straight to a bar, saying she wanted to celebrate with her.
Raising her glass, Jojo said, “Happy breakup. Honestly, I never liked Sheng Yang anyway.”
“Besides his good looks and a bit of money, I don’t see what’s so great about him, and he’s always suspicious and paranoid.”
Jojo gently turned Wen Jin’s face toward her and said earnestly, “If you want to vent, go ahead. Don’t keep it all bottled up inside.”
Wen Jin smiled at her, about to nod, when out of the corner of her eye she saw a group of people. Her expression stiffened slightly.
It was Sheng Yang’s circle of friends.
Wen You was among them, surrounded like a star in the center of a constellation.
Jojo recognized them too and muttered, “What are the chances of running into this crowd here?”
Wen Jin didn’t respond. She lowered her gaze, pretending not to see them.
However, Wen You spotted her immediately and approached with a bright smile. “What a coincidence.”
“Not really,” Wen Jin replied coolly, clutching her bag with one hand and reaching to pull Jojo away. “We were just about to leave.”
Despite her clear rejection, Wen You said nothing, but the people beside her spoke first.
Zhao Yimo glanced at Wen Jin with a sneer. “Sheng Yang’s not here, and you already dare to show Wen You that attitude?”
Such an unreasonable remark.
Wen Jin calmly looked at him. “Even if Sheng Yang were here, would I not be allowed to leave if I wanted?”
“Of course you can,” Wen You smiled faintly, but her gaze under the dim lighting was dark and sinister. “But I just have something to ask you.”
She spoke slowly, “Xinyue sent over some wedding planning proposals, but I feel the lighting doesn’t match my wedding dress. I hope you can have it revised quickly.”
Her tone was calm, as if genuinely giving feedback.
But Wen Jin replied, “You should give that feedback directly to the lighting team you’re working with. That’s not my responsibility.”
“Oh?” Wen You raised an eyebrow. “But I heard that you switched from civil engineering to wedding planning just because of Sheng Yang.”
“I thought designing his wedding was your dream or something.”
Those words landed harshly, barely veiled accusations.
Jojo’s face darkened, ready to defend Wen Jin, but Wen Jin stopped her.
With Wen You’s group surrounding them and only the two of them present, it would be a losing battle.
Besides, Jojo’s family had business dealings with the Sheng family; Wen Jin didn’t want to drag her into this.
With nothing more to say, Wen Jin started to walk away.
But then Sheng Yang approached.
He had changed clothes, lazily wearing a wine-red shirt.
If the shade wasn’t well carried, it could look tacky.
But Sheng Yang’s face was exquisitely handsome.
His eyes slanted downward, which should have given him a puppy-like look, but his pupils were pale, exuding a cold, untouchable aura.
The wine-red shirt only accentuated that detached demeanor.
So even in a chaotic bar, Sheng Yang appeared clean and refreshing.
But clearly, this natural elegance wasn’t meant for Wen Jin.
Beneath his handsome exterior was a wicked core.
He glanced down at Wen Jin. “Since you’re here, don’t leave.”
Wen Jin’s voice lost its usual softness. “Jojo and I have other matters to attend to.”
“What about your father’s situation? Aren’t you concerned anymore?”
Just that one sentence froze Wen Jin’s legs.
She suddenly looked up sharply. “What do you mean?”
Sheng Yang gave her a look but said nothing, instead walking towards the private room reserved by Zhao Yimo’s group.
Wen Jin pursed her lips.
No matter how unwilling, she had no choice but to follow.
Jojo wanted to go with her, but Wen Jin shook her head, holding her hand. “Wait outside for me.”
Following Sheng Yang into the room, Wen Jin stopped beside him.
He glanced at her with a faint tone, “Wen Chaosheng got into a fight in prison. The situation is serious; his sentence will likely be extended.”
Wen Jin was stunned, clearly disbelieving. “My father wouldn’t get into a fight.”
“What’s impossible?” Sheng Yang said casually, holding his glass. “He’s a hit-and-run offender. What wouldn’t he do?”
Wen Jin clenched her palm tightly.
She stood beside Sheng Yang, her eyes lowering to his slender fingers gripping the glass.
She recalled long ago when Wen Chaosheng was Sheng family’s driver, responsible for chauffeuring Sheng Yang to and from school.
Young Sheng Yang was even more delicate and picky than now.
The Sheng parents were estranged, and Sheng senior was busy with his career.
So most of the time, Wen Chaosheng would find ways to prepare delicious food and coax him to eat.
Someone who had cared for him so tenderly was now spoken of so disparagingly by Sheng Yang.
Wen Jin closed her eyes, and when she opened them again, only a profound chill remained in her gaze.
“Sheng Yang, your cruelty terrifies me.”
But then she thought about it—after all these years, hadn’t Sheng Yang treated her just like a dog to be toyed with?
Sheng Yang remained unmoved.
He lifted his eyelids slightly and looked at her. “If you dare to do it, why not dare to hear what people say?”
Wen Jin was genuinely angry. “Have you forgotten that when you were sick, it was him who took care of you—”
Even the night before Wen Chaosheng’s car accident, he stayed up all night caring for the sick Sheng Yang.
Wen You sneered coldly. “You have it backwards. Wen Chaosheng took Sheng family’s money, of course, he had to take care of Sheng Yang. Since when was that a favor to him?”
“Besides, being cared for by someone like him isn’t exactly honorable.”
Her tone was dripping with sarcasm.
Wen Jin’s breathing visibly grew heavier. She tightened her lips like a furious beast.
Suddenly, she grabbed a glass from the table and threw it at Wen You.
But her hand trembled, and most of the drink spilled onto Wen You’s clothes.
Wen Jin looked at her. “You’re truly detestable.”
The moment her words fell, someone pushed her arm aside. Wen Jin staggered back a few steps and hit her head on a nearby cabinet, feeling dizzy.
Her arm throbbed painfully.
She raised her eyelids and met Sheng Yang’s dark, cold gaze.
He squinted and spoke in a low, stern voice, “Who gave you the nerve to go wild here? Get out.”
—
When Wen Jin came out, Jojo was still waiting at the door.
Seeing her emerge, Jojo asked anxiously, “How was it? They didn’t give you a hard time, did they?”
Wen Jin looked at her, her dark eyes reflecting the kaleidoscope of neon lights, shadows fractured within them.
She spoke slowly and deliberately, “Sheng Yang is a bastard.”
