Although Song Bao-guo was deeply worried for the child’s safety, there were things he could not leave unresolved; otherwise, the Song family would never know peace.

Three days later, Wang Zihao waited outside while I went alone into the Song residence to collect the child.

“Remember this well! If anything at all happens to my little Zhao, I’ll hold you to account!”

I took the little boy, Song Zhao, who was barely over three months old, from Song Bao-guo’s arms.

The instant he landed in mine, he presented me with a grand gift of his own: a squirt of baby urine that soaked me from head to toe.

After we got in the car, Wang Zihao laughed at me and said that Song Zhao was protesting.

“Brother Hao, save the laughing for after this is done. How are your arrangements?”

Wang Zihao’s smile faded. “Relax. Everything is set. The moment you give the signal and confirm the target has appeared, we’ll come out and make the arrest.”

I nodded. “Brother Hao, there’s one more thing to remember. Against the Golden Cicada Society, we cannot show mercy...”

I said it to Wang Zihao, but I was also saying it to myself, and it was what Captain Cui had told all of us.

By the time we reached the dirt house in the middle of the fishpond, the car could go no farther. I had to continue on foot by myself.

“Jiang Huai, be careful.”

I gave Wang Zihao a slight smile.

Just as I turned to leave with Song Zhao in my arms, Wang Zihao called out to me again.

“Jiang Huai!”

I turned back. Wang Zihao had found a stun baton in the car, about two feet long, and it looked heavy in his hand.

“Go on.”

After weighing it in my hand a couple of times, I grinned. “This is a treasure. Thanks!”

The dirt house had already been specially cleaned by men sent by Song Bao-guo. It was not exactly comfortable, but at least I could sit on the bed without being disgusted by the dirt.

After laying Song Zhao on the bed, I looked awkwardly at the damp stain spreading across my chest.

I frowned. Can a child this small really have a temper like that? What a foul smell.

There was no water here, so I could only take off my outer coat to lessen the odor.

I checked the time. It was still early. By my reckoning, the Golden Cicada Society usually liked to move at night.

In truth, no matter where Song Zhao was today, the Golden Cicada Society would make its move.

Rather than leave us guessing where they would strike, it was better to seize the initiative ourselves.

So I blatantly told the Golden Cicada Society that I was waiting for them here with Song Zhao. I wanted to see whether they would dare come.

Time passed by the minute. As the sky gradually darkened, I felt the moment had about arrived.

I took the yellow cloth that held the resentment from my backpack.

I shook it open, spread it flat on the floor, and then peeled off the talisman affixed to the yin-yang fish of the Taiji pattern on the cloth.

In an instant, the room was filled with overwhelming resentment.

Resentment has no mind of its own. The moment it was released, it lunged straight for Song Zhao.

But no matter how it battered against the child’s body, it could not get inside.

The resentment had to remain visible; I needed the people of the Golden Cicada Society to feel that it was still there.

Otherwise, if they thought the resentment was gone and the method for breeding new grudges had failed, they might never come. Then wouldn’t all my effort be wasted?

Before releasing it, I had already attached a protective talisman to Song Zhao, so the resentment could not possess him now.

The resentment was stubborn and single-minded. It did not even glance at me nearby, fixated entirely on entering Song Zhao’s body.

That suited me fine. I stood quietly to one side, watching it, wanting to see when it would finally give up.

I did not know how many times the resentment had crashed against Song Zhao’s body.

Just as it was about to touch him, a powerful suction suddenly came from outside. Before I could react, the resentment was sucked out through the window by something.

Alarm jolted through me.

They were here.

At once I grabbed the stun baton Wang Zihao had given me. The moment I pulled Song Zhao into my arms and looked up, I saw a figure standing in the doorway, clad in a black robe and a black hat.

His head was lowered, and I could not make out his face.

The next second, he let out a ghastly, crackling laugh. “We meet again!”

That voice!

It was the man controlling Qin Ru’s corpse!

Instinctively, I held Song Zhao tighter. I did not speak. I only stood there watching him in silence, while my peripheral vision swept the surroundings.

“No need to look. There’s only me...”

I frowned. Only him?

The man lifted his black hat. In the moonlight, I could make out only a resolute face, a man whose age seemed about the same as Song Bao-guo’s.

“Hand over Song Zhao, and I’ll let you leave.”

At that, I could not help but laugh. “You... did your parents never teach you a little modesty?”

Clearly, he had not expected me to speak to him like that. “And has Jiang Shan never taught you manners?”

“You’d better obediently listen to me. Whatever business I have with Song Bao-guo is none of your concern. Don’t go looking for trouble for yourself.”

His business with Song Bao-guo?

Unfortunately, he gave me no chance to think it through. He had already extended his hand toward me.

“Give me Song Zhao.”

My eyes flickered. “Who are you...”

But the man only gave a strange laugh. “Young man, knowing who I am will do you no good!”
