Chapter 142: Your Doom Has Been Delivered (25)
Mu Chen was searching for documents, Jiang Xunchu was looking for items related to his father, and Ling Qiong was simply tagging along.
Therefore, after confirming there were no zombies around, both parties decided to split up.
Ling Qiong remained somewhat uneasy and asked Jiang Xunchu to show her his wound.
When the virus spreads, it is usually accompanied by various symptoms, and Jiang Xunchu was certain the virus had not spread.
However, since Ling Qiong was worried, he had no choice but to roll up his trouser leg to show her.
The virus patterns remained in their original state without any changes.
Ling Qiong nodded in relief. "Remember to tell me if you feel any discomfort."
"…Alright."
…
This place was exceptionally large. They traversed several different corridors that led to various locations.
Jiang Xunchu found a control room, but unfortunately, there were no clues related to Jiang Luyun inside.
"Perhaps it's not here. Aren't there two other elevators?" Ling Qiong said.
Jiang Luyun conducted virus research, yet on this floor, there was no place resembling a virus laboratory.
Jiang Xunchu wanted to check the control room's surveillance cameras.
Regrettably, all the cameras had been destroyed and were completely out of commission.
Crash—
A loud noise echoed from the corridor.
Almost simultaneously, Jiang Xunchu felt a sensation like a needle pricking his thigh, his knees went weak, and he slid down to sit on the floor.
Seeing Jiang Xunchu's movement through the glass, Ling Qiong turned and ran back.
"What's wrong?"
Supporting his thigh, Jiang Xunchu turned pale, gritting his teeth so tightly that even speaking was difficult.
Ling Qiong's heart skipped a beat, and she quickly rolled up his trouser leg.
The black patterns had spread another five or six centimeters and were continuing to spread at a visible rate.
Even faster than last time…
Damn it!
…
The roars of zombies echoed through the corridor, sounding like the shrieks and cries of some monster.
Zhou Shun was pinned to the ground by a zombie, its sharp claws coming within a hair's breadth of scratching his eyes.
Just as Zhou Shun felt his strength draining away, the pressure pinning him down suddenly lightened.
The zombie was kicked flying several meters away, and with a sharp whistle, a bullet sank straight into the center of the zombie's forehead.
Zhou Shun looked up.
The young girl was holding a compact weapon, gazing at him with cold eyes, looking rather angry…
"Shunzi!"
Mu Chen approached from the other side. "Are you alright?"
"I'm… I'm fine."
Mu Chen pulled Zhou Shun up from the ground.
"Thank goodness for Miss Xu," Shunzi said, his heart still pounding with lingering fear.
If it hadn't been for her just now, he probably would have been bitten by now.
"What were you guys doing just now?" Ling Qiong didn't see any shattered glass around here.
Mu Chen and Zhou Shun had discovered a room over there.
This room was very large, and inside was a meteorite enclosed by a glass dome.
That meteorite occupied nearly the entire room, standing there like a small mountain.
Such a massive meteorite…
"I honestly only touched the glass, and it shattered all on its own," Zhou Shun explained. "Right after that, the zombies appeared."
Unlike the glass outside, this one had no electrical power running through it.
He hadn't even exerted any force.
The moment his finger brushed against it, with a loud crash, the entire pane of glass shattered.
Mu Chen picked up a piece of glass from the floor and said, "This glass is bulletproof; even bullets can't pierce it. I can testify that Zhou Shun was merely standing there and couldn't possibly have broken it."
Mu Chen paused. "Why do you care about this so much?"
Ling Qiong crouched on the ground, examining the pieces of glass.
They didn't break it…
Ling Qiong instructed them to back out of the room and close the door.
She walked back briskly. Not knowing what had happened, Mu Chen and Zhou Shun exchanged a glance and followed her.
When Ling Qiong returned to the control room, Jiang Xunchu was sitting in a chair, tinkering with the surveillance monitors.
Images had appeared on the screens, displaying real-time feeds of different areas.
"How are you feeling?"
"Much better," Jiang Xunchu said. "The moment you closed that door, I felt the discomfort fade away."
Jiang Xunchu had watched Ling Qiong close that door through the surveillance camera.
However, there were no cameras inside that particular room, so he couldn't see what was in there.
"Is there another meteorite in there?" Jiang Xunchu guessed.
"Mhm, a very big one," Ling Qiong pulled a chair over and sat down. "Bigger than anything reported in the news."
"Tell me, with a meteorite that large, how did they manage to cram it through such a small door?" Through metaphysics?
Jiang Xunchu had only heard Ling Qiong's description; how could he know the actual situation?
"I need to go take a look."
…
That door was closed, yet it still couldn't completely block the influence radiating from the meteorite.
The closer Jiang Xunchu got, the more uncomfortable he felt.
"Is he alright?" Zhou Shun asked in a low voice.
He was fine just a moment ago; why did he suddenly… look like he was in agony, needing support just to walk?
"He's fine." Supporting Jiang Xunchu, Ling Qiong looked at her beloved cub with a face full of heartache. "Older brother, if you can't endure it, don't force yourself."
"I'm fine," Jiang Xunchu exhaled softly, peering inside through the observation window.
The meteorite sat quietly within.
The floor was covered in shattered glass.
"This room has been expanded," Jiang Xunchu quickly spotted the discrepancy.
Ling Qiong told Jiang Xunchu to stand steady and headed toward the other end of the corridor.
She quickly walked back and reported, "There are no traces of demolition and rebuilding on the outside."
That proved the room had simply been created by knocking down the dividing walls…
Zhou Shun asked, "Then how did they get such a huge meteorite inside?"
The room only had a single door—the one where they were currently standing.
Yet this meteorite…
Wouldn't they have had to demolish an entire solid wall just to move it out?
"What if… when it was placed inside, it wasn't this big?" Jiang Xunchu suggested suddenly.
Mu Chen frowned slightly. "You think it can grow?"
Jiang Xunchu replied, "If it can grow, that would explain how it was ever put into this room in the first place."
Pausing for a moment, Jiang Xunchu added, "Of course, this is just a hypothesis; we'd need documents to prove it."
This theory was somewhat chilling.
An oppressive silence fell over the corridor.
"Did you guys hear a sound?" Zhou Shun broke the quiet.
The noise was faint, sounding like an elevator in operation…
Ding—
In the quiet space, the chime of an elevator door opening rang out abruptly.
"Ughh…"
Like caged beasts, the zombies charged out of the elevator without the slightest hesitation, heading straight toward them.
"Damn it!"
"Let's go!" Mu Chen shouted in a low voice.
Ling Qiong grabbed Jiang Xunchu and ran toward the control room.
The zombies moved with terrifying speed, and Mu Chen and Zhou Shun simply couldn't hold off so many of them.
Ling Qiong told Jiang Xunchu to head to the control room first, then turned back to help.
Ling Qiong scored a headshot with virtually every single bullet; not a single one missed.
"Run!!"
"Get to the control room!"
"Roar, roar, roar!!"
The clawing, snapping zombies pursued them relentlessly. Zhou Shun entered the control room first, followed closely by Ling Qiong and Mu Chen.
The pursuing zombies slammed into the control room door, and the ones behind couldn't brake in time, piling up on top of one another.
The control room door was sturdy, but with this horde of crazed zombies ramming into it, the situation looked precarious.
"Drag that thing over to block it!" Ling Qiong directed Mu Chen and Zhou Shun.
With no time to entertain other thoughts, the two men rushed to push heavy objects over to barricade the door.
