Chapter Eighty-Nine: Drifting
Han Ning sat in the passenger seat, her heart practically in her throat. Amidst her nerves, she was overwhelmed by a sense of awe—she never imagined this man's driving skills had reached such an extraordinary level.
Amateurs watch for excitement, experts observe the technique.
Despite her usual frosty demeanor and a life revolving solely around work, Han Ning was an exceptional driver herself, her abilities approaching those of a professional racer. Yet Yang Jiekai's maneuver through the corner left her thoroughly astonished. This was no longer merely a matter of skill—it was the kind of mastery born of absolute familiarity with the vehicle, a seamless fusion of man and machine.
Both the Porsche 911 and Ferrari were top-tier luxury cars, each with their own strengths. On straightaways, the Ferrari had a slight edge; in cornering, the Porsche 911 was more stable—a key reason Han Ning had lost to Green Hair earlier.
During high-speed driving, weight distribution was crucial; the lighter the car, the better the handling. True experts would never allow a second passenger during a race. But Yang Jiekai had Han Ning ride shotgun, compensating for the Ferrari's lack of stability in high-speed corners.
Typically, drifting during a turn relied on the inertia from a sudden brake—an area where the Porsche 911 excelled. Yang Jiekai, however, chose to lightly tap the handbrake, barely slowing the car, and the added passenger achieved a perfect balance during the drift.
Even so, after the first sharp bend, Yang Jiekai was only ahead by about half a car length. On the straight, the Ferrari’s acceleration shone, and by the second bend, he’d pulled ahead by a full car length.
A light touch on the handbrake, a sharp turn of the wheel…
Screech—
The bright red Ferrari traced a graceful arc, precise as a surgeon’s scalpel, gaining another slight lead over Green Hair’s car on the curve.
By the time two-thirds of the race had passed, Han Ning’s nerves had settled, and the Ferrari was about five car lengths ahead of the Porsche 911.
But another worry replaced her anxiety, and she quickly warned, “Careful, there’s a six-linked hairpin up ahead!”
Han Ning, well versed in the art of racing, knew that Yang Jiekai’s handbrake technique worked for single or double bends, but beyond three consecutive corners, it was unsuitable.
Green Hair, close behind, flashed a sinister smile. He too had been stunned by Yang Jiekai’s driving, but remained confident. He knew the six-linked hairpin was where the true winner would be decided.
You might be good with the handbrake in sharp corners, but let’s see how you handle that hairpin—when the time comes, it’ll be the Porsche 911’s domain!
“Hold tight, honey!”
Yang Jiekai’s face grew solemn. Approaching the six-linked hairpin, instead of slowing down, he floored the accelerator.
“What are you doing, slow down!” Han Ning was so frightened, cold sweat broke out on her forehead. Yang Jiekai’s actions seemed suicidal!
But it was too late to stop him. At such speed, grabbing the wheel would only end in disaster.
Screech—
The Ferrari traced another scalpel-sharp curve, tires squealing and smoke rising.
What nearly made Han Ning faint was that Yang Jiekai gripped the steering wheel with both hands—he hadn’t even touched the handbrake!
Screech—
As the car seemed about to fly off the track, Yang Jiekai suddenly slammed the accelerator. The vehicle, as if pulled by an invisible string, miraculously drifted along the track’s edge and made it through!
Han Ning was utterly stunned.
No braking, no handbrake, not even a foot on the brake pedal—he’d used the most mystical technique in racing: inertia cornering.
After flawlessly drifting through the six-linked hairpin, the outcome was clear: Yang Jiekai won the race by a landslide.
“Honey, hope I didn’t scare you just now.”
Yang Jiekai parked the car, leisurely lit a cigarette, and looked at Han Ning, whose brow was damp with nervous sweat.
Han Ning, still shaken, spoke from the heart, “My biggest regret right now is getting into your passenger seat.”
She’d wanted to ask how Yang Jiekai had mastered such extraordinary driving skills, but the words never left her lips, knowing it would be pointless.
Her curiosity about Yang Jiekai only deepened. He seemed carefree and unruly on the surface, yet spoke multiple languages, understood fine wine, played piano, fought fiercely, and now drove like a legend.
What a strange man!
Han Ning mused silently.
Yang Jiekai flicked his cigarette outside the car. “Let’s go. Time to trouble that brat.”
“Brother-in-law, you’re amazing!”
Han Wei cheered, wanting nothing more than to hug and kiss her heroic brother-in-law.
She liked this suddenly-appeared brother-in-law more and more.
“Green Hair, you lost. What do you propose?” Han Wei stood with arms akimbo, triumphant. “Hurry up, strip naked and run—since I’m in a good mood, I’ll let you keep your underwear, ha!”
Green Hair’s lips twitched with anger. Of course, he wouldn’t really strip and run naked; that would ruin his reputation in the circle.
“How much do you want? Name your price,” Green Hair said, dejected.
“I don’t need your money!” Han Wei pressed her advantage.
At this moment, Han Ning stepped forward. “Weiwei, let it go. Enough is enough.”
Han Ning, seasoned in business, could see right through people. From Green Hair’s manner, she recognized he was far more than a typical rich kid.
Han Wei’s threat was just to vent her anger, never intending to force him to strip in public, so she relented.
Yang Jiekai walked over to Green Hair. “Kid, your skills are good, just lacking nerve. In that last six-linked hairpin, if you weren’t so cautious, you might’ve won.”
He wasn’t being modest—Green Hair’s driving was superb, better than many professional racers, though luck wasn’t with him today.
Yang Jiekai’s own skills were honed amid gunfire on mercenary battlefields, incomparable. The modified Porsche 911 had a cornering advantage, but Green Hair lacked Yang Jiekai’s daring; he had tapped the brakes several times on the bends, which let Yang Jiekai pull ahead.
“Hey, kid, you can leave now!”
Just then, several boys with trendy haircuts grabbed baseball bats and other weapons from the trunk and surrounded them.
One boy with an earring pointed his bat at Yang Jiekai. “Don’t push your luck. You think you commoners can afford to offend Young Master Fang?”
“Shut up!”
The green-haired boy, now identified as Fang Shaojie, rebuked the earring-wearing youth, then looked at Yang Jiekai seriously. “I admit defeat, but I won’t strip and run. Tell you what, from now on, you’ve earned a favor from Fang Shaojie.”
The group of trendy youths was stunned.
They knew Fang Shaojie’s background, his influence in a southern province—his promise was worth more than money.
Yang Jiekai had no intention of really doing anything to Fang Shaojie, but turned to the earring youth and said, “Watch your mouth, or it’ll be dangerous.”
“So what if I talk like this?” The earring youth was furious, stepping forward and jabbing a finger at Yang Jiekai’s nose. “I advise you to get lost, or else—”
Smack!
Before he could finish, Yang Jiekai slapped him, sending him sprawling.
Yang Jiekai darted forward, grabbed the youth by the collar and hoisted him up like a chicken.
“I don’t like threats, and I certainly don’t like anyone pointing their finger at me. Unfortunately, you’ve broken both rules. So you’ll pay the price.”
Having touched both of Yang Jiekai’s taboos, he was not going to let him off. He raised a hand, ready to deal with the reckless youth.
“Stop!”
Han Ning suddenly shouted, rushing forward to grab Yang Jiekai’s arm. “Don’t be reckless!”
Yang Jiekai released the youth, but before Han Ning could relax, he slapped the youth several more times and kicked him away.
The other trendy youths were about to rush in when Yang Jiekai hooked a dropped baseball bat with his foot, caught it, and snapped it in two with a powerful grip—crack!—the thick bat broke cleanly.
The group was dumbfounded. Some trained people could break a bat with a punch or palm, but to snap it by hand like this required immense strength.
“Since I’m in a good mood today, I’ll let you off with a week in the hospital. Next time, you won’t be so lucky.”
Yang Jiekai said coldly to the youth, now lying on the ground, bleeding from nose and mouth.
“Honey, let’s go.”
Having handled the matter, Yang Jiekai prepared to lead the Han sisters away.
Just then, Fang Shaojie called out coldly from behind, “You think you can leave so easily after injuring my people?”
