Chapter 6: Saving a Life

The man’s face had turned as pale as paper. He truly did not want to admit that he was unable to move, but the reality was exactly that; his injuries were too severe, and he was physically incapacitated.

Seeing that the man remained silent, Lin Chuyi became certain that he could not move. If that were the case, did it mean her life was no longer in danger?

Once she reached this conclusion, Lin Chuyi collapsed onto the ground, not even sparing a glance at the several corpses lying nearby. In all her years, this was the first time she had witnessed such a bloody scene, let alone the deaths of several people.

Do not let her air of reckless indifference or feigned foolishness fool you; in truth, everything she had just done was a test of this man. Fortunately, he did not seem to be a villain, or else she might have already been one of those corpses herself.

Observing Lin Chuyi’s reaction, a flash of surprise crossed the man’s eyes, though it lasted only for an instant.

After a long while, Lin Chuyi gradually recovered. Looking at the man lying on the ground, gasping for air, her young face was etched with hesitation. She did not know whether she should save him or not. What if this guy was a bad person? What if he killed her to silence her after he recovered? After all, she had just watched him kill so many people!

The man turned his head toward the girl sitting nearby and said weakly, "I... know... you are the Prefect’s... daughter. My men... are already... on their way... hhh..." After struggling to get these words out, a large pool of blood flowed uncontrollably from his mouth.

He was truly at his limit. After a long pause to rest, he continued, "If I die... they... will think... you did it... and your family... will surely... not survive either."

"What!" Lin Chuyi sprang up from the ground. She had just been wondering how the man knew her identity, but his follow-up words chilled her to the bone. Thinking that her family might be buried along with him, Lin Chuyi panicked.

"You, you—do you eat this fruit directly?" Lin Chuyi asked, crouching down nervously beside the dying man.

"Directly... cough..." With those final words, the man finally lost consciousness.

"Oh, oh, eat it directly." Lin Chuyi nervously opened the box, and a fragrant aroma instantly wafted out.

She took the fruit and held it to the man’s lips, only to realize that he had already passed out.

"Wake up, wake up!" She nudged him a few times, but the man didn't respond. Lin Chuyi grew distressed. Feeling the man’s breathing grow weaker, her panic intensified. If this man died...

Considering the potential consequences, Lin Chuyi looked at the fruit in her hand, gritted her teeth, and popped it into her own mouth. Compared to her family, what was this?

After chewing quickly, she steeled herself and pressed her lips against the man’s blood-stained ones. Fortunately, the man’s will to survive remained; with a slight nudge from Lin Chuyi, he swallowed the juice of the Orchid Fruit.

Having finished, Lin Chuyi quickly pulled back and crouched to the side, watching him cautiously. Before long, she noticed his breathing had become slightly more regular.

"Whew..."

The medicinal effects of the Orchid Fruit were truly miraculous. The person who had been on the verge of death was now breathing normally.

Seeing this, Lin Chuyi let out a sigh of relief and sat quietly to the side. Now that she knew the man would at least survive, she finally realized what she had just done. Her small face turned bright red. After all, she was an unmarried young woman; even though it was to save a life, she had truly kissed a man—and a stranger at that.
