Chapter 61 0063: Beware of the Ancestors Behind Him
City Lord’s Mansion.
A servant responsible for watching over Chu Yun’s residence hurried over to report anxiously, “City Lord, something’s wrong!”
City Lord Guo asked, “What is it?”
“Chu Yun has disappeared. A violent storm suddenly erupted around his house, and when we approached, he was no longer inside,” the subordinate replied.
“That’s bad. He must have gone to the Ye family,” City Lord Guo’s expression changed abruptly. “Prepare the carriage. We’re going to the Ye family immediately. If he confronts the Cao family head-on, it will only end in his death! You—go notify Magician Kurt at once.”
Meanwhile, in the Ye family’s grand residence, the three great families who had also been keeping an eye on Chu Yun received the news of his departure.
So, in the end, he couldn’t hold back and came after all?
When the three family heads gathered and received the call, faint smiles appeared on their lips.
“But the word from the front is that City Lord Guo is also heading to the Ye family. He’s probably going to try and stop us from dealing with that boy!” The head of the Duanmu family addressed the Cao family head, “It looks like we all need to go in person this time. If that boy doesn’t die today, the Ye family will pay for him with their lives. As long as he dares to show himself, no one will be able to protect him—not even the City Lord!”
Just then, a servant arrived to report, “Heads of the three families, City Lord Guo has called for another person to join him at the Ye family.”
The Cao family head asked, “Who?”
“A magician named Kurt from the Mage’s Guild.”
All three family heads frowned. “Why did the City Lord ask him to come? What does this have to do with Kurt?”
“What’s there to fear? We’ll bring our family’s guest magician, Master Mata, along and see what Kurt intends to do,” the Duanmu family head snorted. “In any case, today, no one will be able to save that boy!”
“Masters, the Cui family just called—they wish to go to the Ye family as well to support you,” Duanmu’s secretary announced excitedly after receiving the call.
“Excellent!” The three family heads stood up together. “Then let’s not delay. With the Cui family standing with us, as soon as Chu Yun appears, we’ll take him down!”
With the Cui family’s involvement, the three heads became even bolder.
Thus, the three family heads personally gathered their core members and headed for the Ye family to witness the execution. If Chu Yun didn’t show, all would be well; if he did, no one could save him.
Elsewhere.
Jiang City.
The Hou family.
Yi Jifeng arrived at the Hou residence bearing gifts, paying a personal visit to apologize for his previous offense.
“Second Brother, I must apologize for what happened before. You know how young people are, always getting jealous in front of someone they like. If I hadn’t supported Tianxing, the boy might have held a grudge against his uncle.”
After glancing at the gifts, Hou Yaodong understood that this scoundrel wasn’t truly here to apologize—he’d only come because of pressure from the Hou family.
“Who could fight with someone smiling so politely? Since you’ve come like this, what else can I do?” Hou Yaodong returned a superficial smile, his face friendly but his heart unyielding.
“You’re always so gracious, Second Brother,” Yi Jifeng said with a smile. As he sipped his tea, he continued, “May I ask, Second Brother, why are you so intent on supporting this Chu Yun kid?”
Hou Yaodong glanced at him warily, clearly unwilling to answer.
Unfazed, Yi Jifeng pressed on with a smile, “I hear the Ye family offended the Cao family. This kid stood up for them, and now the Ye family faces extermination. Are you aware of this?”
Hou Yaodong took a sip of tea. “Of course I know.”
“You think so highly of him, but now he’s in serious trouble—doesn’t that worry you? He might die this time, and no one can save him,” Yi Jifeng said, his smile not reaching his eyes.
“What good does it do to worry?” Hou Yaodong replied. “The three great families of Sentinel City are all involved. Our Hou family has no authority to intervene across territories. What can I do?”
Yi Jifeng grinned. “This boy doesn’t know how to cherish his opportunities. You tried so hard to win him over, but he didn’t come to the Hou family. You must be regretting it now, thinking everyone would indulge him. What a waste of your goodwill.”
He sneered inwardly: The Hou family must be in agony, seeing such a brilliant talent cut down before he can spread his wings.
“He owes the Hou family nothing,” Hou Yaodong replied. “In fact, I, Hou Yaodong, owe him a favor. Last time at the Ye family, I had no choice but to help.”
“Oh?” Yi Jifeng was surprised. “Why? What has this kid done to make you owe him a favor?”
“It’s not him,” Hou Yaodong answered. “It’s one of his ancestors from the Chu family who once helped me, and instructed me to look after him if needed.”
“I see,” Yi Jifeng said, feigning regret. “What a pity, then, that you can’t help him this time.”
But soon, realization dawned on Yi Jifeng. He asked, “Wait a moment—you said his ancestor from the Chu family? But aren’t there only two left in his family, just him and his mother? How could he have an ancestor left? How many years ago was this?”
“Who told you that?” Hou Yaodong replied with a half-smile. “He has an ancestor whom even I have never met. Last time I went to the Ye family, I hoped I might see this senior. It’s a pity I didn’t. I wonder, though, if the troubles Chu Yun faces from the three great families of Sentinel City might force this ancestor to appear. In fact, I’m rather curious to see if he will.”
“But these are the three great families,” Yi Jifeng laughed. “Apart from the Jin family, the Cao and Duanmu families are on par with the Hou family—real powerhouses in Sentinel City. Their heads and elites together are enough to deter even the City Lord himself. Oh, latest news: the Cui family head is joining in as well. With that lineup, do you think this boy’s ancestor would dare try to save him?”
Hou Yaodong looked steadily at Yi Jifeng. “Brother Jifeng, let me give you a word of advice. I’ve heard your Tianxing has a hand in orchestrating this behind the scenes, yes? I won’t ask about your involvement, but I must warn you: if anything happens to Young Master Chu, the ancestor behind him will not let the matter rest. The Yi family would do well to be cautious.”
Yi Jifeng’s smile widened. “Our Yi family fears only a handful of masters on Hope Continent. Why worry about someone we’ve never met? I don’t believe anyone would dare stand against an entire family. Oh yes, I’ve arranged for Tianxing to be present at the scene. He’ll record a live video link. Second Brother, why don’t you and I watch together?”
“Very well,” Hou Yaodong agreed, also curious to see if this confrontation would draw out Chu Yun’s mysterious ancestor.
At once, Yi Jifeng ordered his servant to activate the virtual projection device. Yi Tianxing was on-site at the Ye family residence, sitting beside Cao Zheng and recording live. At this moment, the Ye family’s vast courtyard was crowded: the Cao, Duanmu, and Cui families were all present, along with the Jin family’s experts and family heads.
Yi Jifeng glanced at the Ye family members on the screen and clicked his tongue. “That Ye Linglong, honestly—if she’d just married Tianxing early on, none of this would have happened. Such a rare beauty, what a shame.”
Hou Yaodong replied, “If your Yi family crossed territories to marry her, who would dare accept? If war breaks out between the two regions in the future, whose side would she take? Besides, everyone knows powerful families swallow smaller ones whole—Ye Linglong isn’t a fool.”
“Second Brother, you can’t blame us! She had no choice,” Yi Jifeng said, utterly unashamed and full of self-righteousness.
