Chapter 5: The Cannon Fodder Fiancée (5)
“Is this for real? Yun Jin, that devoted fool, actually dared to call off the engagement? The sun must be rising in the west!”
The speaker was An Cheng, Fu Han’s close friend and a firsthand witness to Yun Jin’s endless devotion to Fu Han.
Throughout their university years—four full years—Yun Jin would wake up an hour early every day to personally prepare breakfast for Fu Han.
After trying it a few times, Fu Han thought it wasn’t as good as restaurant food, so he secretly rewarded An Cheng behind Yun Jin’s back.
Later, seeing Yun Jin was indifferent, he openly gave the carefully prepared breakfasts to An Cheng in front of her.
An Cheng couldn’t believe someone who had persistently adored Fu Han for seven years—four in university plus three in high school—would give up on marrying him.
Whistling, he looked at Yun Jin with contempt.
“Yun Jin, Fu Han only attended a single’s party before the wedding. Why are you so worked up?”
“He’s been with so many women he can’t even remember them all. Just because of some photos and a bizarre conversation, you want to break off the engagement? Are you really willing to do that?”
“Yeah, Yun Jin, don’t be angry with Fu Han,” said Fu Mu, Yun Jin’s soon-to-be mother-in-law.
Though she didn’t like Yun Jin either, Yun Jin’s background and character more than qualified her to be her son’s wife. Having someone pliable to control was a blessing.
“Take down that screen now! Displaying such things publicly is a disgrace to the Fu family.”
“If you take back what you just said, I’ll still consider you my daughter-in-law.”
“As for Fu Han, I’ll handle him. Don’t worry—no matter how wild the other women are, I only recognize you as my daughter-in-law.”
“No need.” Yun Jin said coldly, “Fu Han and I have completely broken up. Don’t contact me again. Let everything end cleanly.”
Regarding An Cheng, Fu Han’s gossip-mongering friend who kept stoking the fire, Yun Jin sneered.
“Birds of a feather flock together. You and Fu Han are the same kind. Good-for-nothing, showing off for what?”
“You!”
An Cheng’s face darkened with anger. Yun Jin’s casual remark had struck a nerve, exposing his shameful status as an illegitimate child.
Humiliated and enraged, he lunged forward, pointing a finger at Yun Jin’s nose and cursing.
“Yun Jin, you’ve got a death wish.”
With that, he raised his palm, ready to slap her hard to teach her a lesson.
Unfazed in her high heels, Yun Jin delivered a swift kick to his abdomen.
An Cheng clutched his stomach in pain, staggering back a few steps in disbelief.
“How dare you lay a hand on me!”
Yun Jin smiled coldly. “If I’m going to hit you, why wait for a special occasion?”
“What nonsense are you talking!” Fu Mu helped An Cheng up, shouting at Yun Jin.
“Apologize to An Cheng immediately, or don’t expect me to let you off.”
Yun Jin regarded Fu Mu as a clown and ignored her, stepping down the stairs in her heels.
Fu Mu’s anger grew; as a matriarch of a wealthy family, she could never allow herself to be seen laying hands on a daughter-in-law—that would be disgraceful.
She vented her fury on Yun Jin’s father, Yun Zhongshan, who had just arrived.
“Look at the daughter you raised—no manners whatsoever! She fought with Fu Han’s best friend in public and even spread vile words to ruin Fu Han’s reputation. Yun Zhongshan, I’m telling you, if you don’t give me an explanation today, I will stop all cooperation between the Fu family and your Yun family.”
Yun Zhongshan frowned deeply. This marriage had never been a perfect match.
Business had been tough lately, and he had hoped that this alliance would strengthen cooperation with the Fu family and save the Yun family from ruin.
But now his future son-in-law, Fu Han, had publicly fled the wedding, causing him great embarrassment.
Still, Yun Zhongshan thought the Fu family would make amends.
His daughter suffering a little was bearable, as long as it didn’t affect his business.
Unexpectedly, his daughter immediately undermined the Fu family.
Offending the Fu family put his entire enterprise in jeopardy. Prosperity would no longer be his to enjoy.
So he quickly sided with Fu Mu, scolding Yun Jin with a stern face.
“What are you doing? Put down your phone and apologize to your mother-in-law and An Cheng at once!”
An Cheng raised his head proudly, wearing a triumphant smirk.
“Yun Jin, if you kneel and apologize to me right now, I’ll forgive you.”
What nonsense.
He actually expected her to kneel before him in public? She must be out of her mind.
Just as Yun Jin prepared to give An Cheng a lesson he wouldn’t forget, Xie Yanci, who had been quietly watching from the crowd, suddenly stepped onto the stage.
He grabbed An Cheng’s shoulder from behind and stomped on the back of his heel.
An Cheng, caught off guard, fell to his knees, howling in pain.
“Ah! Who are you? What do you want?”
“Open your eyes and see who I am.”
Before An Cheng could turn around to look properly at the person pinning him down, Fu Mu’s lips trembled, her eyes wide with disbelief.
“President Xie, what are you doing here?”
Xie Yanci was the current CEO of the Xie Group, the century-old richest family in City A.
His presence alone commanded awe wherever he went.
For such a titan, a paragon in the industry, to appear at Fu Han and Yun Jin’s wedding was truly a blessing to the Fu family.
Not only Fu Mu was stunned; even the entire Fu family was dumbfounded.
Some rubbed their eyes in disbelief, and once they confirmed this was the same figure often featured in financial news, they gasped in amazement.
Fu family’s ability to invite such a luminary meant their business prospects were surely about to soar.
Xie Yanci met their gazes with icy calm.
“What’s this? You don’t welcome me to your wedding?”
“Of course not,” Fu Mu said with a smile. “President Xie gracing our humble son’s wedding is truly the Fu family’s great fortune.”
Ignoring Fu Mu, Xie Yanci strode onto the stage and grabbed Yun Jin’s hand.
“Yun Jin, I’ve got your back, got it?”
Everyone was frozen in place.
Yun Zhongshan, after a brief moment of shock, quickly regained composure and smiled brightly.
Finally, the Yun family was about to bask in immense wealth and honor.
Who would have guessed his daughter was acquainted with this hidden giant? The Yun family’s ancestral tomb must be smoking with joy!
He broke from his usual demeanor and eagerly approached.
“President Xie, could we discuss a potential cooperation?”
Xie Yanci gave Yun Jin a half-smile as he held her wrist tightly, causing her pain. She forced a weak smile and feigned ignorance.
Damn it, why was he hunting her down?
Last night, Yun Jin had only gone to the nightclub to complete a specific mission.
It was supposed to be just a casual fling, so why had he taken it seriously?
Now, facing a powerful figure with both status and influence, her heart pounded loudly in fear.
What should she do? Pretend not to know him or accept his offer and embrace the identity he arranged for her?
She truly didn’t know.
Maybe she should start by playing dumb?
Yun Jin forced a smile and feigned ignorance.
“President Xie, do you know my father and came here to talk business with him?”
She passed the hot potato to Yun Zhongshan, who readily took the cue and smiled.
“President Xie, I apologize for the poor hospitality at this wedding. If you don’t mind, shall we go downstairs to a private room to discuss business properly?”
If not now, then when?
Taking advantage of the moment, Yun Jin immediately pulled her hand away from Xie Yanci’s grasp, grabbed her skirt, and sought a chance to slip away.
“Stop right there! Did I say you could leave?”
