Rao was so sickened by the stench that she began cursing at the top of her lungs, then sprang straight from the white horse toward the Imperial City.

“You ugly monster! Is the Huanlan Continent so short of warriors that you have to bring out this dead thing to fight? Using corpses to disgust me—just wait until I tear you apart!”

The instant Rao leaped away, the blood-soaked creature on the ground savagely bit down on the white horse’s head, cutting off its shriek in mid-cry.

Several Wu warriors nearby had already been wounded. Some had lost an arm, others a leg, each torn apart until great chunks of flesh were missing. In an instant, the scene became a living hell.

Huanlan Haoyang, who had been following behind Huanlan, could not help frowning at the gruesome sight. Huanlan happened to turn and catch the expression on his face.

“What? Are you afraid?”

“You should know that this is a world where the strong rule. Mercy toward your enemies is cruelty toward yourself!”

“Yes, Aunt Lan, your lesson is well taken! Haoyang will remember it forever!”

Seeing that she was somewhat angry, Huanlan Haoyang hurriedly nodded in agreement. He could only force himself to stare at the slaughter below without blinking.

Slaughter was indeed what it was—but in truth, it was a massacre: bloodstained monsters reeking of corpses devouring the Wu warriors.

Hearing the screams behind her, Rao turned and saw that every warrior on her side had become food for the monsters. Fire blazed in her eyes as she released a thorn and sent it surging toward Huanlan.

Mo Liuli had already retreated successfully into an inconspicuous corner. When she saw the appalling scene below, her heart suddenly turned cold.

“Save him! He is Ge’s only descendant!”

A strange voice suddenly rose from the depths of her heart, startling Mo Liuli. She patted her chest hard, then forced herself to gather her wits and search for Rao.

“Hahaha! Ge, oh Ge—after all those unrivaled skills, how is it that your descendant is so utterly useless?” Huanlan laughed arrogantly as she effortlessly dispelled Rao’s thorns.

To prevent the shock waves from injuring Huanlan Haoyang, she sent him to another section of the city wall, where he could still see everything unfolding on this side.

Rao’s gaze darkened. She planted her feet firmly and summoned Azure Orchid and Purple Bamboo in rapid succession. The two flowers twisted tightly together, carrying a streak of crimson light as they shot toward Huanlan.

“You are not allowed to insult my grandmother!”

“Oh? Still, you have the makings of a real man! His Majesty thinks you are even more alluring than Ge. How is it that your temper is so fierce, unlike Ge’s?”

Huanlan neither dodged nor retreated. With a flick of her hand, she conjured a Lan Fan and raised it toward the incoming crimson light.

Crack!

With a crisp sound, the two flowers wrapped in the red radiance shattered as though they were made of ice.

“Ugly monster! You are hideous, vicious-tongued, and cruel-hearted! Give me back the lives of my warriors!”

Rao was enraged. Wave after wave, she launched one attack after another without pause.

All the guardians of Wu City possessed the ability to attack with spirits. Spirits were rare flowers infused with spiritual energy, somewhat resembling the summoned beasts of a summoner.

Yet in essence, they were entirely different from a summoner’s arts.

The stench of corpses in the air was gradually cleansed by the fragrance released by Rao. Below, the Corpse Regiment had completed its task and concealed itself long ago. Only its leader, the Corpse Warden, remained by the city wall, watching the battle.

Without Huanlan’s command, he would not intervene—not unless Huanlan herself faced danger.

“Idiot! Can’t you see that she’s only playing with you? Run!”

If you could not win, then run. That was the lesson she had learned from the countless memories of Mo Li. Staying alive was what mattered most. Mo Liuli had no intention of putting on a brave face merely to save her pride.

Rao did not hear clearly what Mo Liuli was shouting. Huanlan and Huanlan Haoyang across from her, however, did. They followed the sound and saw only a little maidservant. Huanlan could not be bothered to spare any attention for her and simply concentrated on dealing with Rao.

Rao had brought a large force of warriors to blockade the Imperial Palace, causing Huanlan considerable trouble. She could not understand how Rao had managed to become involved with the Mo Li of this lifetime.
