Chapter 22: Claiming Credit Undeservedly
Lin Zhaozhao couldn't care less whether he believed someone was more handsome than him or not.
What Lin Zhaozhao did care about was this: *Don’t get ahead of yourself just because I give you a little bit of courtesy. To put it nicely, you’re my eldest brother; to put it bluntly, aren't you just fated to be executed by the emperor and torn apart by five chariots?*
*Just standing near you makes me fear your cursed destiny will rub off on me! And you have the nerve to bring a little "green tea" bitch here to lecture me?*
Lin Qingwu: "..."
This is absolutely outrageous! Are you cursing me to be torn apart by five chariots again?
"Lin Zhaozhao!" Lin Qingwu slammed his hand onto the table beside him. Since these were just wild, nonsensical thoughts in her head, he couldn't openly confront her about them, so he used another pretense. "Wanyue is my own sister. We grew up together since we were children. What right do you have to hit and scold her constantly in this manor? Is this the upbringing of a noble lady from a prestigious family?!"
As soon as these words were out, Lady Bai immediately said with a pained expression, "Qingwu, Zhaozhao is not that kind of person. To say such things is far too hurtful!"
"My words are hurtful, but the things she does are not?"
Lin Qingwu felt that since returning, Lin Zhaozhao had changed significantly; she was no longer the timid, submissive girl she used to be.
This should have been a good thing, as he had always despised how she used to mope around the room as if everyone owed her a debt, taking her frustrations out on Wanyue or the servants. It was completely unrefined and didn't befit a child of their Marquis of Qingyuan household.
However, being overly arrogant was also a disaster.
Lin Qingwu felt he had to make his stance clear. "Mother, I won't interfere with how you spoil Lin Zhaozhao, but Wanyue is your daughter too. You know how much we brothers cherish her; please don't always favor one over the other!"
In particular, Lin Zhaozhao’s mouth had been dripping with honey whenever she saw him lately, clearly trying to curry favor to take Wanyue's place. But when that failed, she turned hostile, her tongue as venomous as ever. She was clearly not a simple person to deal with.
"Big brother, don't say that to Mother. Mother still treats me very well..." Lin Wanyue chimed in, helping Lady Bai explain.
Lin Zhaozhao sneered as she watched this little "white lotus" perform. "Oh, now you know Mother treats you well? Why didn't you stop Lin Qingwu when he started talking earlier!"
"And you," Lin Zhaozhao pointed a finger at Lin Qingwu. "You say Lin Wanyue is your own sister, but she isn't the biological daughter of Father and Mother. Brother, since you say it like that, could it be that you were the one who was swapped at birth, and you’re actually just some wild child of unknown parentage who crawled out of someone else's belly?!"
As she spoke, she covered her mouth, feigning the look of someone who had just stumbled upon a shocking secret.
Lin Qingwu: "..."
He had truly punched a steel plate this time.
But Lin Zhaozhao hadn't actually intended to be this abrasive.
It was just that the incompetent author had saddled her with this miserable identity!
The author insisted on this "true vs. fake daughter" trope. It was bad enough that the original host was a victim despised by her own brothers, but the author also tried to dress it up with some high-minded "core theme" about how even if Lin Wanyue’s biological parents were of low status, "are kings and nobles born with high status?" and that a "great female lead" should climb to the top on her own!
Having read the entire story, Lin Zhaozhao thought: *Climb on your own ass. You stupid female lead and you stupid author, both of you can go to hell!*
Lin Qingwu: "You are truly—!"
*I am truly what? I am truly what?*
Lin Zhaozhao snorted. Forget about "fraternal love and respect"; when others were vicious to her, she wouldn't give them any pleasant looks in return.
All she wanted was to trample over their hypocritical morality and be herself!
*Why are you looking at me with that disbelieving face? If you annoy me, I’ll break your dog legs! That’ll save you from being torn apart by five chariots and dragging the whole family down with you!*
Lin Qingwu: "..."
This is truly inverted cosmic order!
He feared he might really be losing his ability to discipline this younger sister.
"You unfilial wretch!" Lin Qingwu took a deep breath. "Everything I say is for your own good. If you had even half of Wanyue’s character! I wouldn't even ask you to save the little prince of the Northern Rong, but if you could just diligently learn the zither, chess, calligraphy, painting, or even basic medical knowledge, I’d think it was raining blood from the sky!"
Lin Zhaozhao paused. "What 'saving the little prince'?"
Why did she feel like something was wrong?
Lin Wanyue, not noticing Lin Zhaozhao’s confusion and driven by a desire to crush her, blurted out, "Naturally, it’s about the time the little prince of the Northern Rong was bitten by a venomous snake and I helped save him!"
"Wait, you helped someone treat snake venom?"
It wasn't even that Lin Zhaozhao found it ridiculous; how could she not know exactly what Lin Wanyue was capable of?
The only "cheat" the author gave her was "good fortune"!
Treating snake venom?
*This little green tea bitch couldn't treat a snake bite to save her life! What is she bragging about here?*
*Though, speaking of snake venom, I did save a child who didn't look like a Central Plains native near the entrance of the Hundred Herbs Hall a while ago!*
But that didn't make sense!
Lin Zhaozhao pondered. In the original book, Lin Wanyue had indeed stolen the original host's credit.
But in the original story, the host had saved the Third Prince—a grown man in his thirties or forties—who had been ambushed and severely wounded while traveling to negotiate on behalf of the Northern Rong.
The host had carried him into a carriage and taken him to a clinic, saving his life.
Who would have thought that the little bitch Lin Wanyue would rush in to claim the credit?
When the original host found out, she went mad with rage and tried to beat Lin Wanyue to death to expose the truth. But she was stopped by Lin Qingwu and confined to the manor.
As for Lin Wanyue, not only did she receive the title of County Princess, forcing the original host to kneel to her, but she also became a companion to the Sixth Princess in the palace. During the process of receiving her title, she met the male lead, the Ninth Prince, eventually becoming Empress and rising through the ranks.
But now, perhaps because of her transmigration, the person saved had become a "little prince," but the theft of credit was an absolute certainty!
Lin Qingwu was startled by Lin Zhaozhao’s inner thoughts. "What do you mean by that?"
"What do I mean? Lin Wanyue, don't you know in your own heart? You say you saved the little prince? But how do I remember that it was clearly I who saved him that day!"
"You're spouting nonsense!" Lin Wanyue reflexively retorted, about to point at her and call her shameless, when she inadvertently caught sight of the large gold lock hanging around Lin Zhaozhao’s neck.
She suddenly remembered what Officer Xu had said: the little prince had mentioned that the girl who saved him was wearing a very large gold lock.
And today, Lady Bai had just given her an identical one. Could it be...
Lin Wanyue’s face went pale. "No, that's impossible!"
Lin Zhaozhao was almost driven to fury by her. "If you don't want people to know, you shouldn't have done it! You’ve done something shameless and you have the nerve to stand here and say it's impossible! If you say you saved him, then tell me, what method did you use to treat the snake venom? What prescription did you write?"
Lin Wanyue gritted her teeth. "What I used is none of your business! Who knows if you’d steal my prescription and go around spreading nonsense!"
"You don't have to tell me, but since Big Brother and Mother are both here, why don't you explain it clearly to them! Let them hear for themselves who is lying between us!"
