Chapter 27: Jiang Changyuan Cheats
"Just you wait, kid. I'm calling for backup."
The security guard swung his baton in frustration. Being restrained by a group of punks was humiliating. He had to save face; otherwise, if the higher-ups found out, they would think he couldn't even handle basic security duties.
Just as he stepped into the guard booth, a soprano voice rang out from the direction of the main building.
"Young Master Jiang!"
A capable-looking woman in a purple hip-hugging skirt and three-centimeter heels hurried over, a professional smile plastered on her face. "You must be Young Master Jiang, right? I'm late, please forgive me."
The security guard, still clutching his phone, and Jiang Changyuan were both stunned.
The guard was stunned because he recognized the woman in the purple skirt—the businesswoman who had just made a grand move to rent out the entire thirteenth floor.
Jiang Changyuan was stunned because he also recognized her: Zheng Wenqing, the future legendary "Golden Hunter."
"Zheng—"
"I am Zheng Wenqing. It’s a pleasure to meet you, Young Master Jiang. Please guide me in the future."
Jiang Changyuan closed his eyes, then opened them again. He had given up. Why was the management talent he had randomly found online the third female lead from the original book?!
He looked at her slender, jade-like hand, then at the thinly veiled anxiety on her face, and finally glanced at the heels on her feet. Legend had it that for every centimeter added to her heels, her competence grew by a factor. Three centimeters—not bad. Right now, she was far from the decisive, fiercely loyal hunter she would eventually become; she was still a novice.
"Jiang Changyuan." He took her hand, smiling like a fox. "The Menglong Agency will depend on you from now on, Manager Zheng."
Zheng Wenqing froze. It wasn't because of his young age or the way he addressed her, but because of his surname. Jiang? Was he the one she knew—the wealthiest man in Beining City?
For a moment, she forgot to retract her hand, her breathing quickening. She had hitched her wagon to a powerful figure!
Jiang Changyuan, meanwhile, thought that if someone delivered themselves to his doorstep, he would be a fool not to take it. As long as he played his cards right and kept Zheng Wenqing tied to him, she would never have the chance to help the male lead.
"Young Master Jiang, you two..." Zhang Qiang looked back and forth, sensing an odd atmosphere between them.
Clearing his throat, Jiang Changyuan pulled his hand back, locked eyes with Zheng Wenqing, and both shared a knowing smile.
"Young Master Jiang, I have finished negotiating the lease for the thirteenth floor. Please, follow me."
"I'm afraid not."
Zheng Wenqing panicked instantly. She was so broke she was practically eating dirt; was Jiang Changyuan going back on his word and firing her?
"Did I do something wrong?"
"It's not your fault. It's him—he won't let us in." Jiang Changyuan gestured toward the security guard. It wasn't that he wanted to be petty. Zhang Qiang and the others didn't exactly have a polished image, and they would inevitably deal with security in the future; he didn't have time to come rescue them every time they were blocked at the door. Even with a company badge, some people were born with their noses in the air.
"Young Master Jiang is the General Manager of my Menglong Agency. Is this the attitude you Cheng Shen Building security guards have?" Zheng Wenqing turned and took a few steps forward, her presence surging. She knew this was the first test Jiang Changyuan had set for her.
By the time Zheng Wenqing confirmed Jiang Changyuan's identity, the guard had already dropped his phone in terror, trembling under her interrogation.
"Boss, I was wrong! Please, spare me this once. It was all a misunderstanding..."
"Whether it was a misunderstanding or not, I will discuss it properly with Mr. Zhang."
Leaving those words behind, Zheng Wenqing respectfully invited Jiang Changyuan inside. As they stepped into the building, Jiang Changyuan gave her an appreciative look.
"Our agency will be dealing with all sorts of people in the future. Dealing with problems by going directly to the third party is the right call. You did well."
"You're too kind, Young Master Jiang... no, I should call you President Jiang from now on!" Zheng Wenqing was delighted. Her job was secure; as for whether this bowl of rice would turn into gold or silver, it wasn't the time to ask. She would have plenty of chances later to dig into Jiang Changyuan’s background.
Zheng Wenqing had only come for the negotiations; the actual payment for the lease still required Jiang Changyuan.
"President Jiang, the contract is in order. You may sign." Zhang Jingwang looked at Jiang Changyuan with curiosity. So young, and already the head of a company? Had he been cooped up at home for too long, or was he out of touch with society?
"The money has already been transferred to your account, Mr. Zhang. Feel free to come by and visit us often."
"Uh..." Faced with the friendly invitation, Zhang Jingwang had a refusal on the tip of his tongue, but he was afraid of hurting the child's feelings. Looking at that group of multi-colored hair, it didn't look like a legitimate business; he couldn't wait to stay as far away as possible.
Seeing the payment go through, Zheng Wenqing exhaled and took over. "Mr. Zhang, there is one more thing I need to discuss with you."
"Go ahead, Miss Zheng."
"Regarding the security situation in your building..." Zheng Wenqing was someone who held a grudge; to impress her boss, she was the type to settle scores on the spot. She couldn't let President Jiang take this slight back to school!
After sending off Zhang Jingwang, who was now tasked with reforming the security, Zheng Wenqing led the group to the thirteenth floor.
"Is this really where we’ll be working? It’s so big and bright!"
"Thank you, Young Master Jiang! From now on, we’re office workers in suits and ties; we don't have to do dirty work anymore."
Zhang Qiang and the others were as excited as children with new toys. Jiang Changyuan, meanwhile, was giving instructions to Zheng Wenqing on what to do next.
"I've already sent you the development plan for the agency. As for everything else, use your best judgment. Help them with their housing and appearance; make sure they look like normal people. Where are you staying?"
"Reporting to President Jiang, I'm currently in the East District, but I guarantee I won't be late for work."
The East District was underdeveloped, a two-hour commute from the Cheng Shen Building.
"Rent an apartment nearby. Live with Zhang Qiang and the others; it’ll provide some security. It doesn't matter how many of them share a room, but you should have your own. You have the final say on hiring and arrangements."
"There is two hundred thousand in this card. Use it for all expenses. If it’s not enough, call me."
Taking the bank card with slightly trembling hands, Zheng Wenqing felt a mix of excitement and sorrow. She was excited because she had found a job and wouldn't have to "eat dirt" anymore. She felt sorrow because Jiang Changyuan trusted her so deeply, even though she had initially thought of this as just a stepping stone...
"Alright, I have to get back to school."
"President Jiang, let me see you off!"
Passing by the security booth on their way out, they saw that the guard had already been replaced. Watching Jiang Changyuan leave in a taxi, Zheng Wenqing didn't plan on returning to the empty office; instead, she dragged the group of unconventional youths toward the furniture market.
Upon returning to school, Jiang Changyuan felt that the atmosphere was off.
"Young Master Jiang, this is bad!"
"What are you wailing for? Did your grandfather die?"
The chubby boy rushed forward, his lip trembling. "I wish he had died..."
"No, wait, Young Master Jiang! You've been reported!"
During the monthly exam, Jiang Changyuan had placed in the top ten of his grade with astonishing scores. While it brought shock and envy, it also invited jealousy and hatred. His scores had been posted yesterday, and today, someone had reported him for cheating.
"You know whether you cheated or not!"
"And the students know whether I cheated or not!"
Inside the office, Jiang Changyuan stood tall and composed, completely unaffected by the strange looks from those around him.
Yan Chang slammed the table, his tone fierce and menacing. "If you didn't cheat, produce evidence! If you can't, then you cheated. Blatant cheating—you must be expelled!"
