Wan Mu was knitting by hand at the time, earning money to help support the family. When Wan Yan asked like that, she immediately threw down her work and shouted at him with hatred.
“The day I gave birth to you was full of humiliation. I knelt in front of the Lu family’s main gate, begging them to give me a chance to live. I bled from hitting my head on the ground! I pressed my face hard against the earth, only to be cursed and spat upon by them!”
“How do you expect me to celebrate your birthday? Do you want me to constantly dredge up those memories and torture myself?”
Wan Yan was frightened by Wan Mu’s expression and suffered nightmares for a long time afterward.
From then on, he wished he could take a few sleeping pills every birthday and wake up the next day so he wouldn’t suffer from insomnia.
Lu Chaoxi didn’t know this and only felt regret.
She had always sent Wan Yan gifts on time every year. Though he threw them into the trash bin in front of her, she assumed he was celebrating his birthday properly with friends.
Had she known, she would have clung to him all day long, insisting he blow out the candles and take a bite of the cake.
Carefully, Lu Chaoxi took out the cake she had made by hand and focused on lighting the candles.
Wan Yan watched her every move and heard her gentle voice: “Why not celebrate? This is the most meaningful day of your life on earth.”
Lu Chaoxi looked up and smiled at him. “You didn’t just add one more person to the world. The moment you took your first breath, the thoughts and name of Wan Yan were born. You are the most unique gift of that day.”
At first, Wan Yan’s eyes showed disbelief, then jealousy, and finally malicious revenge.
Those words had to have come from Lu Xianqing and her.
Her birth was the hope of the masses, a beautiful dawn, so Lu Chaoxi’s eyes could be pure and free of distractions, and her smile forever bright and clear.
Every time he looked at her, jealousy overwhelmed him, and he wanted to crush her smile and brightness with all his might!
Clenching his fists tightly, Wan Yan spoke coldly, “You’ve lost your memory, so you forgot how I married you.”
He pressed forward relentlessly, forcing her to retreat.
“If you hadn’t clung to me like a leech, and if your father Lu Xianqing hadn’t left me no way out, I wouldn’t have been forced to marry you. It was only because your young lady Lu liked me! So people like us at the bottom can only be manipulated.”
Pushed against the wall, Lu Chaoxi shook her head dazedly under Wan Yan’s resentful gaze. “I don’t remember... Wan Yan, did my father really do those things to force you to marry me?”
She looked at him tearfully, hoping he would say no.
How could their marriage have been forced by her father? He had promised her he wouldn’t interfere in her feelings or disturb Wan Yan’s life.
Lu Chaoxi believed Wan Yan married her willingly, even if it was for the Lu Corporation.
But there was an even worse reason.

Wan Yan lowered his voice and said word by word into her ear, “Lu Chaoxi, I’ve told you I don’t love you. You’re pathetic, always clinging to me.”
He pressed close to her, and her tears naturally fell on his chest, instantly soaking his shirt with wet stains.
Wan Yan chuckled lightly. “Why cry? You got everything you wanted. What are you feeling wronged for?”
“No, I’m not feeling wronged.” Lu Chaoxi wiped her tears with his tie, hugging his waist with a red nose.
She said, “Wan Yan, you must have suffered a lot, which is why you hate all things beautiful. But what I have most of is exactly what you despise. I want to share that beauty with you. I want you to be happy.”
Wan Yan’s body stiffened. He felt exposed and ashamed, angry yet too deflated to say anything.
Lu Chaoxi was definitely here to torment him, definitely.
But suddenly, he remembered the five percent of shares—the key to controlling the Lu Corporation.
He quickly regained his composure and chose not to talk about these rotten things anymore.
Song Yin must have already picked up the items from the airport.
With this thought, he abruptly took Lu Chaoxi’s hand and walked out of the office.
Lu Chaoxi was bewildered but followed reluctantly. “Where are we going?”
Was he dragging her to get a divorce?
Without turning back, Wan Yan’s voice was cold and hard: “The wife of the president of the Shen Corporation is hosting a banquet tonight and invited us. I’ve arranged for Song Yin to have the stylist and makeup artist waiting at home. I’m taking you back to choose a dress.”
“Wait!” Lu Chaoxi hurriedly grabbed him. “We haven’t even lit the candles on the cake yet. Can we make a wish and blow out the candles first?”
Putting everything else behind Wan Yan had become Lu Chaoxi’s habit for nine years.
Wan Yan glanced at his watch, then at her pleading eyes, frowning. “Is it really necessary?”
Lu Chaoxi lowered her head like a shy chick.
They stared at each other silently for over a minute before Wan Yan said nothing and walked back into the office. “Fine, blow the candles.”
Lu Chaoxi happily bounced along behind him, talking nonstop. “The cake is sea salt flavored. I remember you like it.”
Wan Yan instinctively denied everything she said, “I don’t like it.”
“Alright, alright,” Lu Chaoxi coaxed like a child, “I just thought you liked it.”
She said that as she ran ahead to light the candles.

Just as the candles were lit and before Lu Chaoxi could start singing the carefully prepared birthday song, Wan Yan blew out the candles like brushing away dust.
After Wan Yan perfunctorily blew out the candles, Lu Chaoxi pushed further, scooping a small piece of cake with a spoon and offering it to his mouth.
“You have to eat a bite of cake for the birthday to be complete.”
She tried her pitiful act again but was mercilessly rejected by Wan Yan.
“The cake you made? I don’t think it’s edible.”
Discrimination, blatant discrimination!
Lu Chaoxi took a detour and ate the cake herself, full of defiance.
After a few seconds, she hooked her arm through Wan Yan’s and urged, “Let’s hurry home and try on the dresses, or we’ll be late!”
Wan Yan’s sharp mouth surprisingly knew that she had mistaken salt for sugar.
Lu Chaoxi buried her head in embarrassment, missing the smile at the corner of Wan Yan’s mouth.
On the way back from the company, the luxury brand store manager was already at home with the stylist and several racks of dresses waiting.
Wan Yan’s suit had been custom-made in advance, so after changing, he sat on the sofa the entire time, waiting for Lu Chaoxi to pick a dress.
Lu Chaoxi held up a one-shoulder mermaid gown in front of her. “Wan Yan, do you think I look good in this dress?”
Wan Yan, who was on a call handling business, looked over and his gaze darkened.
Lu Chaoxi was tall and strikingly beautiful. The dress suited her figure well.
Wan Yan hung up the phone, walked over, took the dress from her hand, and tossed it aside. He said flatly, “It’s ugly.”
Then he stepped past her and selected a black, high-neck, long-sleeved gown from the many dresses.
“A high-neck dress can cover your scar, so you won’t have to worry about anyone seeing it.”
He placed the gown in front of Lu Chaoxi, gesturing slightly, and said, “This one’s very fitting.”
